Custody of the Eyes

Monks and nuns,
ascetics and miscellaneous humble proletariat folks,
were taught custody of the eyes,
to show respect for those older
and/or wiser
and/or more supremely royal,
and/or in other positions of merited or inherited authority,
to avoid appearing too curious
too available
too interested,
to avoid temptations
of lust and envy and gossip,
to avoid that part of our reality show
that was only meant for the real adults
in our extended family rooms and screens,
creeping across hedge and boundary and custody-paradigm issues
of who is worthy to be in and who not-so-much.

African-American sons and daughters of enslavement,
were taught custody of the eyes
and ears,
and nose,
and hands,
and mouth,
and mind,
because what may be nutritious for WesternWhite Entitlement folks
is what is inappropriately dangerous for nonWhite dependent nonfolks.

Custody of the senses, including the eyes,
is a form of risk management
and precisely what healthy, curious polypathic trusting people
would never ever choose to do,
to enrich not only our own curious multiculturing eyes,
but also to do our part to facilitate
therapeutic opening of our EarthTribe extended families’
ecologically deep-nutritious, bicameral nurturing, eyes.

Custody of the eyes,
risk-management, anger-management, fear-terror management,
does not invite the curiosities of appositional loves,
invitations,
mutual gratitude for still emerging sacred-cooperative humanity,
natural/spiritual nondual dignity,
integration of our potential
for more regenerative,
self/other acclimating,
Earth-Secular/Sacred multicultural health integrity.

George Lakoff reminds us that
“Most people’s first [custodial] experience with governance
[of the eyes and all that eco-bio system that lies bicamerally behind]
is in their family.”
[Here I would pause to extend this family’s self-governing timeline,
back to embryonic beginnings,
Pre-Left-Dominant language development,
to suggest this is where our within-matriarchal family governance
experience first began,
then out, from there,
into identifying a LeftBrain dominant individuated EgoIdentity,
also bicamerally structuring confluent/dissonant polarities,
but also stepping back in time,
now,
suddenly realizing this bicameral-nurturing Ego’s
freedom of eye and mind and ears for those who can hear
Earth’s ecological vocation toward inclusive multicultural health,
echoes RightBrain Elder memory,
DNA encrypted,
RNA co-mentoring nature-spirit root systemic intelligence,
regenerative health
ecopolitical commonly-held conserve-progress senses
that could never work with full regenerative intent
while confined to custody of this EgoIdentity’s marginalized,
repressed,
suppressed eyes.

“Your parents govern you: they tell you what to do,
what’s good for you and bad for you,
and what’s good for the family;”
and, if you are of great glad good health fortune,
how to deep nurturingly learn to love self/other regeneratively,
and why we take care of our health best together,
cooperatively,
rather than LeftBrain ego-centric competitively,
leaning toward fearsome sociopathology,
expecting lesser paranoid beings to practice
custody of the eyes
and to respect YangHubris right to enforce condemning violence
against less enlightened minds and too-liberal bodies.

branches of the family further removed

and perhaps currently enslaved and commodified

by withdrawing affection,
social isolation [such as custody of the eyes],
denying desires,
instilling guilt or shame,
or physical [condemning powering-over aggression of mindbody ownership, proprietorship, Yang-hubris] force.”

no longer cowed and commodified and controlled
by custody of the YHWH-narrow-way wu-wei co-operating eyes,
free to look out and bicamerally recreate
our renewing Ego/Eco-Reality WinWin Game Show.

Freedom from custody
is also bicameral freedom to customize,
to acclimate to our shared sacred-secular primal ecology
of mutually cooperative health and safety,
empathic trust,
Basic Attendance of all nurturing sensory communicators,
living within ecopolitical communities.

Prophetic Water

In the recently published Death of a King: The Real Story of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior’s Final Years, Tavis Smiley reminds us that living a prophetic and integral life does not result in winning popularity contests. While prophets may become mystics, saints, and geniuses post mortem, Dr. King was no exception to the historical rule that no prophet is broadly welcome in his own time.

This thesis reminded me of a Taoist aphorism:

Who receives unto himself the calumny of the world

Is the preserver of the state.

Who bears himself the sins of the world

Is the king of the world.

While Dr. King had gained broad support for his positions regarding racism, as he retained a consistent ethical voice in support of equal rights for women and against the culture of violence and war epitomized in the Vietnam War, he would have had increasing difficulty had he ever aspired to elective office. His allies in D.C. resented Dr. King for biting the hand that they believed had fed him more than sufficiently already. His African-American clergy colleagues often did not appreciate King’s views on the rights of women in society, much less within their churches.

Both Mr. Smiley and Laotse speak to the creative tension between powerful prophecy and effective redemption. The strength of prophecy for redemptive effectiveness, to support regenerative change, becomes compromised by cultural dissonance. Too much cognitive dissonance is dismissed as insanity or marginalized as appropriate for the saint and martyr, but not realistic for universal human nature. Yet as redemptive comprehensiveness is softened, contained, diminished, the prophetic voice is softened for more confluent ears.  Regenerative potential can be largely residual potential; less incarnated.

The cutting edge of regenerative optimization is a rationality that ebbs the flow and follows the flowing-confluent edges  around, and eventually through, the ebbing knots of cultural dissonance. Inviting society into a more rational future becomes more effective through the weakness of optimally ebbing and flowing water, energy; both listening carefully and summarizing astutely the echoes and distresses within historical and cultural trends.

 

There is nothing weaker than water

But none is superior to it in overcoming the hard,

For which there is no substitute.

That weakness overcomes strength

And gentleness overcomes rigidity,

No one does not know;

No one can put into practice.

[Ibid, p. 306]

 

Perhaps no “one” can put water’s wisdom into practice because the flow of regenerative energy is intrinsically interdependent, swelling where there is confluent and sure flow, and cautious and much slower, gently inviting more positive and inclusive discernment, where the diverse sprays of mutual dismay remain more complexly knotted. But, gentle invitation is the land of the facilitator, and not the stand-alone prophet. Active peace-making walks between these two worlds–which Dr. King did rather better than most of us.
