Rights of Justice

When criminal justice
is not also decriminalizing mercy
it is also not social
or even economic justice.

When political power
is not also self with other empowering
then it is also anti-social
and not sustainable economic power.

When sacred lives
are not also profanely natural ubiquitous loves,
then we are also idolatrous
and not ecologically informed
by Earth’s economically regenerative rights
and wrongs.

Maturing Up Together

When you hear justice
do you also listen for responsive mercy?
Or are you more likely to feel merciless revenge
against uncivilized behavior
swelling vibrant adrenaline
baptizing your self-righteous bloodstream?

If revenge is your best defense
against chaotic complexities of anti-social behavior,
If punitive humiliation is this justice you would mentor,
live by,
protect,
then you will be an often disappointed,
and disappointingly ineffective,
parent,
and would best stay far away
from anything in law enforcement
and civil defense,
and gun permits.

Advocates and defenders of justice for all
are deep lovers of intentions and behaviors
positive humored
seeking their notnot negative unbalancing
of empty cleansing rituals including Society’s ecopolitical liturgies,
obsessive-compulsive demoralizing ruminations,
ruinations,
ramblings and echoes of great and small climatic transitions
quaking Earth’s moral imagination
steeped in Anthro cultures and histories,
kind and not-unkind.

Justice without mercy
is like reactivating love without peace,
like trying to actually mentor love
without internal and interdependent contentment
that we are in this life together,
all both guilty and innocent of most everything one might imagine,
until we fall apart
to reweave yet another new day,
with notnot strictured Elder shadows,
mercifully thrown together
as not-not fully grown regenerates.

Earth Rights: Declaration of Climate Interdependence

Remix of Thomas Jefferson’s thoughts a few years ago.

When in the Course of Earth’s climatic events,
it becomes necessary for cultures to resolve political bands
which have connected Her with human nature,
and to assume among the powers of Earth,
separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Earth’s Health entitle them,
a deep respect for the opinions of others requires
that we should declare the causes which impel us to this Declaration of Interdependence.

We hold these truths to be self-evident,
that all Earth’s Tribes are primally regenerative,
that we are endowed by Elders with certain unalienable Rights,
that among these are Life as Love,
Liberty from Terror and Liberty to Nurture,
and the evolution of CoOperative Health as Happiness.
That to secure these rights,
Governments are instituted within and between Earth’s Tribes,
deriving our just powers through therapeutic discernment of the governed,
That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of Healthy Life,
Liberty,
and CoOperative Happiness,
it is the Right of Earth’s Tribes to alter or to abolish it,
and to institute new Government,
laying its cooperative foundation on such ecological principles
and organizing its health-powers in such form
and multicultural function,
as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Health Safety and Loving Happiness.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that regenerative nutrient-systems long established
should not be changed for light and transient causes;
and accordingly all experience has shown,
that human nature is more disposed to suffer,
while evils are sufferable,
than to right ourselves by evolving the self-governing functions
to which we are more accustomed.
But when a long train of anthrocentric abuses and usurpations of power
used as a weapon,
evinces a design to reduce multiculturally enriching outcomes
under anthrocentric despotism,
it is Earth’s right,
it is EarthTribe’s regenerate duty,
to throw off such pathologies of government,
and to provide new mentors and models for future health and security.

Such has been the patient sufferance of these DNA/RNA Tribes;
and such is now the necessity which constrains us
to cooperatively reweave our former Competing Systems of Government.

The history of the present nation-states is a history of repeated injuries
and usurpations of cooperative governance powers,
all having in direct object the establishment of mutual immunity
and anthrocentric hubris.

To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.
We have refused Earth’s Assent to Love’s Natural Laws,
the most wholesome and necessary for good multicultural outcomes.
We have discouraged governments from passing laws of immediate and pressing climatic importance.
We have refused to pass other laws for the accommodation of all Earth’s Tribes
and EcoSystems,
a right inestimable to them
and formidable to tyrants only.

We have dissolved entire species and healthy ecosystems repeatedly,
opposing with manly firmness Earth’s matriotic rights of healthy evolution.

We have refused WinWin ecotherapeutic orthopraxis for a long time,
nation-states remaining in the mean time exposed to all the WinLose dangers
of aggressive invasion from without,
and terrorist convulsions within.

We have endeavoured to remove and destroy indigenous populations of these States;
refusing to encourage their healthy migrations,
and appropriating Earth’s Commons through commodification.

We have affected to render the Military independent of WinWin therapeutic outcomes
and competitively superior to Civil powers
of active political and economic cooperation.

We have combined with other nations
to subject ourselves to a jurisdiction foreign to Earth’s regenerative constitution,
not acknowledging symbiotic processes
of mutually subsidiary and complementary evolution.

We have not protected ourselves from punishment and defiance
by deep learning rewards of empathic trust
and healthy love of truths within nutritious beauty.

BeAttitudes

Boredom.
Basic Attendance.
Bliss.

Basic Attendance,
like everyday naked birthday suit Positive Psychology,
wu wei squeezed in between boredom and bliss.
A “wear your everyday stay-at-home comfy clothes”
way of balancing
Yin’s manic excesses of sensory-cognitive relational internalization
and
Yang’s monocultural excesses of ego-conscious totalitarian supremacy,
each and all very nice in mutual moderation,
but really not sustainable for Business As Cooperatively Usual
ecopolitical
everyday mundane purposes
in extreme dualistic polarities.

Basic Attendance
neither grasps for ego’s supremacist Win
though others Lose happiness,
nor despairs of ego’s ephemeral,
shame-filled absence of efficacy,
lack of interest in whatever Earth offers
as a mix of nutrition and pathology
in too-slow times
of ego’s under-investment in actively imagined love fertilization,
wanting what grows healthiest for right now’s appropriately wealthy cooperative attendance
within and yet toward Earth’s multicultural ecopolitical balancing voices.

Our authority to label behavior with criminal over-yanged intent
might better also include yin’s within responsibilities
for concomitant disabling/ennabling ecopolitical outcomes for all concerned,
for therapeutic intent,
as ecologically harmonic
within/without healthy communication practices
and sometimes ego-disjunctive disciplines.

What is good for goose, also good for gander,
but what is bad for gander
should not also feed the goose.

Fugitives of Justice

Thank god I finally was caught and cited
for doing something that I didn’t do.

Just think how much worse I would feel
if I actually had done it,
as I have done so many stupid thoughtless things
without getting caught,
at least not by the judicial system.

I hope it all balances out
and at least I can face the music
knowing of my innocence this time,
and continue hiding all my negligent guilts from other times,
failing to read bedtime stories when they could have helped,
failing to remember to touch with kindness
especially when hurts could thereby be healed.

We sometimes confuse reasonable human error,
perhaps negligent in the absence of other stressful distractions,
with deliberately choosing to respond to damage
with full-willed intent,
to actively evade responsibility for damage,
for life’s victimizing owies.

And sometimes our front line justice system,
we have both inherited and created
to leave for our children to suffer against
and rejoice with,
further fuels this confused misunderstanding
confuses poor communication and human error
with taking high risk evasive action
far outweighing positive,
far less time and money invested,
opportunities to act
in a more socially acceptable spirit of cooperation
by exercising a basic Golden Rule orientation
to self-with-other governance.
When this happens, we evade credibility,
to too quickly embrace criminalizing responsibility,
perhaps due to our own overly-paranoid imaginations.

Communication.
Economic and political life is all about misunderstood messages
and sending out clear, consistent, redundantly positive messages.

Would any right mind,
when asked by a witness to a car door ding,
“You’re going to leave your number on their windshield aren’t you?”
would anyone fully insured,
totally sober
with a pen and paper in the car,
truly respond to that question with a “no”
and then drive calmly and slowly off,
leaving plenty of time for multiple witnesses to get a plate number?

Maybe.
Maybe if he had looked at the cherry red truck
and could not see damage
that portended a visit for needed cosmetic repair.

Then again,
maybe the witness only asked this question
in the silence of her own imagination
or out loud but at a level of discreet volume
restricted so only she and those with her could hear.
After all,
you don’t want to confront a crazy stranger
in a busy parking lot
who just might need some help
coping with his psychotic daughter
having an ill-timed manic episode,
laughing hysterically while blasting Ella Fitzgerald
singing “Love For Sale” across the medical center’s parking lot
right?
Or wrong?
Or maybe something in between?

Who are the victims here
and is there even one that could not have been made stronger
and healthier
with and by a stronger spirit of cooperation?
Thereby making it even more likely
that next time,
next place,
next cherry red truck,
next victims of life’s little transitional challenges
will get things better,
rather than climatically worse.

In Our Dotage

What do you dote on?
Who do you dote with, if anyone?

“Dote” is an old-time word for ruminate,
to dwell on and within,
to become absorbed by and with.

Then there is also “antidote”.

Let’s imagine that our massive events and entertainment media
were to merge into an eventertainment industry,
hypnotised and hypnotising
to dote on negative events
in which we explore ourselves and others as victims in some dissonant way,
suffering anthro-doting creations not yet present when champion creator god
looked and saw that we smell good.

This way of empathizing with others
stepping into our co-awareness of humanity,
discovering both my and our identities as victims of abuse and neglect,
terror and malignant apathy,
also evolves reverent wonder and awe
recovering
discovering
uncovering champion creator antidotes,
new ecopolitical gods and goddesses
ways and means
for and of
images and dreams of crevices and cracks
filling with peaceful justice
fragrant with lemon-scented sustaining mercy,
lavender of love,
in four-dimensional organic color
following outlines of days when healthy therapeutic news was good
and bad,
but all agreed,
normatively good was green below with blue above
in yellow light
from which we came to champion through each night.

If we are victim doters
then antidoting champions too
to see full color stretching identities
of me through organic you,
both victim and larger self-potentiating champions,
heroic powers cooperating our more positive psychology,
evaporating our too negative dotage,
together.

Multicultural Political Health Design

I have had a highly redundant,
one might even choose polypathic,
graduate studies experience
spanning my adult life to date.

This began with a semester of Philosophy.
Just enough to learn I wanted something more experiential,
a more communitarian environment of Applied Metaphysics, perhaps.

So then I began, and soon completed, studies for the Master of Divinity degree,
which has an arcane ring to it,
but basically the title implies just the opposite of what degree candidates most hope for,
to be Mastered by Divine Love,
to economically and politically operate as an icon of all-inclusive ecological love.

Those receiving the M.Div.
hoped to apply their ecopolitical science of empathic trust,
our mutual Basic Attendance,
to life as liturgical theology
or at least teleologically benign song and dance;
to be the love today we proclaim for tomorrow,
rooted in our humane-divine nondual nature-spirit compost
of ecopolitical peace-integrity with justice-truth becoming;
pilgrimage,
The Ways of Divinity,
co-mastering together.

Fortunately,
when I landed in a rural Colorado parish,
the beat-down aging poor mutually-marginalizing Mexican and Anglo faith community
invited me to reconsider further investment in administering sacraments
disconnected from ecopolitically healthy outcomes of empathic trust.
To continue as individuals,
families,
and as a multiculturally rich community
of mutually holonic,
respected,
cooperative,
trusting co-empathic faith,
we needed more of a Total Makeover,
a gut rehab,
an economic design to fuel our continuing collective political incarnation
into this Beloved Therapeutic EcoPolitical Community
we each long to belong within,
as integrity without.

Responding to apparent hope for stronger organizing
and planning
and budgeting
and ecopolitical design and implementation,
and evaluation and socioeconomic change skills,
I accepted an invitation into a double Master of Public Administration and Community [Economic] Development degree program,
primarily taught by PhDs in Political Science;
my first among too many loves as an undergraduate at Michigan.

Here I learned, once again, that politically correct administration of empathic trusting,
sometimes mistrusting,
and even actively distrusting totalitarian political relationships
historically and culturally thrive
when “follow economic wealth”
also means “responsibly invite multicultural political as personal health”
internally economic as externally political,
nondual internal-external co-arising ecological landscapes of nutrition.

Humane ecopolitical landscapes are ruled by active hope
and cooperative potential within
as divinely landscaped multicultural ecology without,
polypathic faith in love’s synergetic trust
and discovery
and curious regenerativity of enlightening imagination.

The U.S. Declaration of interdependent Independence and Constitution were born of Enlightenment CoOperative EcoPolitics.

Applied ecopolitical science looked a great deal like applied theology,
or at least teleology, healthy purpose, therapeutic cultural meaning.
Democracy develops fragrant discernment through co-empathic multicultural trust,
moving toward inclusive resonant resolutions of complexly interdependent ecopolitical issues,
risks,
opportunities,
social investments and historical-cultural divestments,
intending improved climate health
and less climates of pathology,
whether too hyperactively warm
or too near to flat-line fading into freezing despair.

My issues with effectively developing ecopolitical health,
by suppressing dis-ecological pathologies,
past failures of achieving a truly multiculturally abundant history of sustainable healthy climates,
soon led to confusion about a great cultural divide
between two vocational labels:
1. Political Scientist, and
2. Permacultural Designer.

This great cultural divide appeared front and center
more recently when I became certified as a Permaculture Designer.
It helped me to look more carefully at the functional intent of “political”
as compared to “permacultural” outcome goals and use-of-power objectives.
As I thought more about how our normal day-to-day scientific investment in learning about power includes learning primal differences between multicultural designs
and monocultural monopolies of totalitarian mistrust leaning toward distrust chaos,
dissonance,
then polypathic confluence of design and pattern correlations emerge as the compost,
the food,
the fodder of our ecological as ecopolitical learning enterprise.

“Permaculture” was chosen to distinguish perennially designed
and democratically self-governing landscapes
from more traditional annual economies of “Agriculture” business,
with more of a replant, spray, and harvest of chemically treated quasi-edibles,
nutritionally malignant regarding fertile health of Earth’s soil,
leading to well-established suboptimal health-trends of ecopolitical Business As Usual.

Permaculture designs are for and on and about and composed of information rooted in past positive polyculturally balanced community landscape outcomes.
These polyculturing ecopolitical landscapes began as maps of nurturing health plans for exteriors only,
like gardens and farms and river banks.
But, this organic economic and political view of power-with ecological balancing climates
has moved from exterior to increasingly interior ecopolitical health landscapes,
like bicameral full-octave nature-spirit nondual deep learning healthy multicultural mindbody landscapes, dialogues, stories, evolutions.

A political power relationship of healthy nutritional economic/ecologic design
pulls together the implied normativity of Political Sciences comparing unhealthy totalitarian powers producing outcomes of mayhem and terror
to democracies intended to nurture co-empathic cooperative trust.
If designers using permacultural ecopolitical principles and procedures for healthier polycultural climates,
then we are also scientists exploring transactional-relational nutrient-power principles
and investment/divestment procedures for sustaining multicultural health designs and sustaining power-with development,
co-investment in planning,
and harvesting health outcomes rooted in (0)-sum Earth-centric climates
of polypathic ecopolitical health.

Permaculture Design Certification more or less brings me back full circle,
where graceful articulation of applied metaphysics
invites active,
relentless pursuit of ecopolitical deep learning
mutually cooperative faith communities
within bicameral heart and lungs and brain and guts and limbs and genetic roots
as cooperative Beloved Communities incarnating together without.

People of radically cooperative faith,
profound empathic ecopolitical trust,
ask what and whom you believe WITH,
while those of a more fundamentalist-exclusive faith,
including active mistrusts of alien faith systems as more or less idolatrous,
ask what and whom you believe IN.

If you believe in evolutionary cosmological processes
that you do not believe also believe in you,
cooperatively together,
then you are less likely to achieve healthy nutritional ecopolitically sustainable outcomes,
while you are waiting for SomeOne Other
to grace you with His Transcendent truth-beauty presence.

If you believe with processes of ecosystemic health,
then you have joined the evolutionary permacultural partisans of healthy regenesis,
wherein lies all evidence of creation,
rather than nihilistic monocultural nothing.
Then again, you might conceivably believe in both,
which is a highly polypathic wu wei pilgrimage–
a razor’s edge teleology of enculturing history.

Dillen’s Continuing DMV Adventures

I wrote a sad but true urban legend called “Dillen and the DMV” last week.
Here follows an update.

Background Review:

One of my health care employees, Dillen, has wicked ADD, borderline intelligence, not qualifying for disability supports, which are few
and those few minimal at best anyway,
but also challenged by things like getting to work on the right day at the right time,
challenged by processing verbal communications,
whether written or spoken more slowly than Business As Usual pace and pattern would permit,
challenged with struggles to establish and maintain healthy positive social relationships,
much more challenged by intimacy,
so often settling for companionship that does not foster mutually therapeutic co-mentoring,
challenged by his felt urgency for speed while driving,
challenged by States Attorneys who persuade him it’s OK to accept guilty as charged
for driving 45 in a 35 mph zone on his way to work,
never mind that so were all the cars in front of and behind him,
not to worry that this will inevitably result in a 3-month suspension of his license
because he can get a Work Permit,
except, oops,
never mind,
the DMV will not give Work Permits to suspended drivers
with more than three moving violations,
encouraged by State Prosecutors to go right ahead,
send in that Work Permit application
with his $100 nonrefundable fee
because the DMV is really all about punishing DUIs,
of which Dillen has none
because he doesn’t drink
because, in part, he knows it is bad for his mental health,
especially his chronic issues with depression.

In “Dillen and the DMV” I write to the DMV Commissioner,
the Chief States Attorney, and the Attorney General
about this series of unfortunate events.

Update:

I hear back from the DMV.
This letter patiently reviews Dillen’s multiple infractions.
Two involve having others in his car with marijuana or concomitant paraphernalia,
(why not just “supplies” or “equipment”?)

“Marge, did you order the paraphernalia for the copier machine yet?”
Word choices in the public sector often distract me.

but Dillen was not charged with driving stoned,
because he wasn’t.
He was the designated driver for his “friends”
who did not have their Medical Marijuana cards on them.

Then there was the time he might have been going 35 or 40 and hit black ice,
totaled his car
which ended upside down,
for which the local police felt they must issue some form of moving violation,
after all, we do have those towing charges
and the need for all those emergency folks to stand out in the freezing ice storm,
and there are these two drug-related violations on his driving record
so he was probably stoned anyway, right?

And then there was this time,
when Dillen was pulled over
ostensibly for speeding,
but really this was about driving on a suspended license
without a Work Permit
which he didn’t have because
(1) DMV didn’t have a current address to send him his notice,
so he didn’t know he was driving on a suspended license, and
(2) no one had told him,
including the Police Officer who pulled him over,
there is this Work Permit thing
which would have covered his butt
on this particular adventure in high speed suburban crime.

However, this letter from the DMV Director of Programs leaves out some details,
as does my summary.
Then the Program Director reassures Dillen and I of her concern for Dillen’s mess,
which someone else might have called unemployment
and yet another round of couch-surfing homelessness,
but CT’s pesky State Statutes wouldn’t allow her to refund his application fee,
and, besides,
the application form says right on there that it won’t be refunded
even if the application is rejected

Apparently for reasons that remain in the shadow of the public eye.
My two page letter was too subtle for government comprehension
of our own collective abuse and neglect.
She confirms the DMV does have explicit standards for rejecting applications,
including more than three moving violations,
but fails to apologize for designing her Program’s communication plan
to be sure that disproportionately young urban minority low-income males
with mental health and self-medication issues
would be fleeced of their last $100
ripped out of their hungry pockets
to apply for a Work or Education Permit
that State Statutes prohibit her,
so sadly,
from handing out like mother’s milk to a starving baby.

She also does not speculate about why State Prosecutors Dillen has met
are all apparently unaware of stipulated public, but effectively private, criteria for rejecting
pricey applications.

She also fails to mention what she might do to correct this situation
of not providing transparent public information
in a way that allows respected residents of the State of CT
to make a fully informed decision about wasting their money
by further investing in the future miserable outcomes
of shoddy DMV Programs.

She also does not explain where we,
the tax-payers of CT,
were when concerns about the need for job security,
especially for those in hard-to-employ populations,
where we were when needs for food and housing,
healthy wants for continuing education and training,
including the need for continuing education and training,
including the need for reasonable transportation,
even in the winter,
where we all were when these were not being weighted sufficiently against risks,
allowing licensed drivers with complex histories
to continue on their journey
the best they can.

Personally, I know Dillen responds much better to a warm hug,
a patient smile,
and expressed appreciation for continuing to improve,
and encouragement to continue with work
and sticking with a healthy daily routine,
which does not include speeding,
even if everyone around him is racing to nowhere good.

Yesterday I was mesmerized for several hours by a TV series
“Underground”
about the Railroad prior to the U.S. Civil War.
A champion anti-slavery attorney
confesses to his Northern wife,
as a younger attorney he used to settle estates,
including estates of slave-holders,
which sometimes led to the awkwardness of arranging for resale of people,
families,
often resulting in the tearing of children from their mothers’ arms,
and other similar heinous crimes against nature
and mental health.

For some reason
I kept thinking about that clerk at DMV,
reading Work Permit applications,
after depositing the enclosed nonrefundable $100,
looking at the high security publicly invisible list of reasons not to help
depressed people living mostly in their cars
have a modestly better chance at life,
as if what is a right for him or her
on his or her way to work and home again,
is a too luxurious privilege for a fragile at-risk criminal population,
enslaved by their need to self-propel their freedom futures.

Dillen and the DMV

TO: CT Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner, Chief States Attorney, Attorney General

FROM: Dillen Dye’s Employer

RE: Some apparent non-compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act; common courtesy, civil respect; freely accessible pursuit of health, happiness, and prosperity

I don’t know where the States Attorney Officers and the administrators of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) were hiding when the Americans With Disabilities Act issued regulations protecting us from things like bullying, intimidation, failure to disclose information, discriminating to the disadvantage of those who have more than their fair share of disadvantages pursuing those values our Constitution explicitly mentions as meriting our mutual protection.

One of my employees now has a five year troubled history with Officers of Other People’s Peace and the DMV. The latest episode is a denial of his application for a Work Permit, submitted with a nonrefundable $100 application fee, which he can ill afford, especially given this denial requesting the great privilege of driving himself to work during the duration of his currently suspended driver’s license.

How his license became suspended is a long and troubling history of miscommunication between DMV and State Attorneys who seem to assume it is their job to represent the healthiest interests of everyone in the State except the one resident they are currently fleecing, but also troubles between Dillen’s hyper-deficited mind and right foot.

A quick skim of the American With Disabilities Act might cause reasonable people to take the position that Dillen should either receive the Work Permit that the State Attorney told him he would get if he would simply bother to apply, or have his application fee refunded. After all it does seem difficult to justify he received fair value for his $100 investment in a public system that has at best ignored, and at worst messed with, his private system, getting through each day and night without further suicidal ideation.

This past May, the State’s Prosecuting Attorney was a surprisingly happy young person, probably not all that long a member of the Bar, and it was getting late in the afternoon on a perfectly lovely late Friday afternoon. She came close to begging Dillen to pay a bargain basement reduced moving violation fee of just $400 if he would just agree to cancel his date with the apparently beleaguered, and perhaps not in such a great mood, judge. In fact, if he would sign up for a guilty as charged notice going to the DMV, so they could suspend his license yet again, but not to worry because they would surely jump out of their collective skins to give him a free pass to drive to work and school whenever he needed, because after all we are all good people and we want those good things to be happening in your life, if he would sign up for this line of bullshit right now, she would knock off another $100 because she could see he was such a cooperative kinda guy and wouldn’t it be nice to get out of here and enjoy the rest of his day, if not maybe quite so much his life?

She didn’t mention any problem about now having 7 violations on his DMV record so investing $100 in the Worker Permit application would be delusional, at best. She didn’t mention that AfricanAmerican 20-year-old Dillen, driving a beat-up looking van in a rather lavishly comfortable ecopolitical environment, had cars in front of him and behind him also going 45 mph, but apparently he was the only one unaware he was driving on a suspended license, because, after all, how could the DMV send him a notice through the mail that would actually get to him—although email would have most certainly worked—due to his nomadic ways.

So, yes, Dillen has more than three moving violations, but probably would not, if he had been told, upon his first Suspension, that he could apply for a Work Permit to drive despite Suspension. This was news to him, as he was about to begin his third Suspension, although he has yet to receive his first Suspension Notice.

Apparently no one, except perhaps the person whose digital signature appears at the bottom of the Denial?, knows about this three strikes and you are out of a $100 non-refundable application fee. He saw no notice specifying possible reasons for denial. Nothing in red, or even black, ink saying: WARNING, If you have four or more moving violations do not waste your money!

Yesterday, Dillen had an appointment with yet another State Attorney. This, a few hours before receiving the denial notice from DMV. When Dillen told him that he was waiting to hear back from DMV about his application for a Work Permit, this Attorney too was remarkably sanguine, saying something like “Look, you have no DUI on your record, we want to get you on the road for work and school.” So they continued his case, hoping this latest Suspension would be over, license restored, and Dillen could move on, put this self-propelling mess behind him.

Dillen, State Attorneys, and I are all surprised and disappointed to learn of this covert restriction on issuing Work Permits. And I am his employer. Or was, but now that he has no way to get to work or pay his rent, I suppose my reaction was supposed to be: Well, who’s next?  I believe you should give him his permit or at least refund his extorted application fee. What utter stupidity to increase homelessness and risks of serious mental health issues when we could simply issue more Work Permits!

Not to blow this out of all reasonable proportion, but to add larger and longer perspective, this denial of Dillen’s application for a Work Permit is only the latest episode in his five-year troubled history with driving safely and responsibly as part of his moving into independent adulthood profile. Dillen’s level of sensory-neural challenges and his motivation to live a reasonably accommodated life, without intimidating-bullying Police Officers and inscrutable labyrinthine DMV communication issues, and fee extortions that could not possibly pass any discriminatory effect legal challenge, are concerns we might all approach with better implemented concern and integrity.
