Public Policies v Reactive Comb-Overs

Public policies are program designs
with regenerative health and safety vetted practices,
rooted in evidence of positive outcomes
and usually supported by some form of systematic theory
about why they appear to do more good than harm,
and at what cost compared to alternative strategies.

Producing executive orders
that are primarily reactions against existing public policies
without evidence that these reversals of direction
will not do more harm than good
is not developing responsible public governance policies;
it is elitist dictatorial promulgation of merely subjective influence
without intent to respond to either positive natural
or spiritual,
and certainly not ecologically regenerative, experience
without any democratically responsible analysis of their effects,
specifically in comparison to extant policies
now being replaced by fiat.

To news media:
please do not confuse President Trump’s degenerative procedural orders,
apparently rooted more in fear- and anger-mongering,
with democratic, constitutionally-resonant, establishment of responsible public policy.

Maturing Up Together

When you hear justice
do you also listen for responsive mercy?
Or are you more likely to feel merciless revenge
against uncivilized behavior
swelling vibrant adrenaline
baptizing your self-righteous bloodstream?

If revenge is your best defense
against chaotic complexities of anti-social behavior,
If punitive humiliation is this justice you would mentor,
live by,
protect,
then you will be an often disappointed,
and disappointingly ineffective,
parent,
and would best stay far away
from anything in law enforcement
and civil defense,
and gun permits.

Advocates and defenders of justice for all
are deep lovers of intentions and behaviors
positive humored
seeking their notnot negative unbalancing
of empty cleansing rituals including Society’s ecopolitical liturgies,
obsessive-compulsive demoralizing ruminations,
ruinations,
ramblings and echoes of great and small climatic transitions
quaking Earth’s moral imagination
steeped in Anthro cultures and histories,
kind and not-unkind.

Justice without mercy
is like reactivating love without peace,
like trying to actually mentor love
without internal and interdependent contentment
that we are in this life together,
all both guilty and innocent of most everything one might imagine,
until we fall apart
to reweave yet another new day,
with notnot strictured Elder shadows,
mercifully thrown together
as not-not fully grown regenerates.

Optimal Wins

What words do we choose for maximizing our ultimate accomplishments,
achieving our healthiest goals,
proportioning our 100% successful therapeutic outcome projections?

Why do these words,
and our feelings about these choices
wave in and out of optimal happiness and prosperity,
even when quantitative measures suggest our historical maximums
continue to trend up and up toward infinite irresolution?

We say we could become anything,
but do we mean we might achieve everything,
every power,
timeless omnipotence?
How do WinWin ecopolitical norms
accommodate WinLose evolutionary imaginations?

Permaculturists,
like environmental therapists
and holistic medicine practitioners of new life out of old deaths,
favorably contrast polycultures with problematic monocultural outcomes.
Weed patches, essentially,
where you intended your front yard garden
and which may infest where you intended to grow your healthy ego identity.

We might hope to become more polypathic achievers
by acclimating to less egocentric monopolistic gestalts,
climates of self and other awareness becoming atrophied subclimates,
static,
aging hoary traditionalists of thought and faith concomitant feelings,
calcifying empathic trusters of ego’s always limited
health v pathology hour by hour,
day by day,
decade by decade,
life by life contests, comparisons, contrasts,
each and all co-arising.

Yet, like Yangish competitive power over others
and Yin’s gooier cooperative internalized power with others,
these opposing bilaterals
are also dynamically recycling appositional revolutions
within and without climates and subclimates
of intricately networking change,
searching for optimal,
not maximal extreme fundamentalist,
but optimally sustainable healthy tensegrity, synergy, therapy,
softly contentious contentment,
peace through responsible and mutually-held flexibility,
in-between competition and cooperation and victimization,
in-between LeftBrain deductions and RightBrain inductions,
in-between monocultural ecopolitical maximization of human ego-natures
and polycultural ecopolitical cooperative minimization of all Earth’s Living Natures
lies a vastly complex, often feeling chaotic, overwhelming
transitioning
regenerating middle ground,
an in-between Tipping Pointed recycling networks of issues and platitudes,
a wu-wei spatial place of ego/eco-mind,
collective ecoconsciousness
and RealTime WinLeft/WinRight flexibly enlightening
enriching
endeepening thermodynamic balance.

In this in-between shadow place of becoming healthier balancing identities,
monocultures begin to look like what remains
of former polycultures,
artifacts of cherished Elders,
and what could continue to become part of a new wealthier
denser
ecologically balancing multiculturally thriving future.

What looks like monopolistic alien powers over little benign-ego me,
begin to look like what remains from our former shared polypathic
ecotherapeutic identity
hoping toward future powers with each other person and species,
imagination’s deja vu of a felt monopolistic forever compost
nurturing perfectly and deepdarkly enriching Black Holed wombs
of embryonic time’s regenerative evolutionary integrative
reweaving promise,
never beginning
and ever ending
timeless ecoconsciousness.

Truth with beauty natures of enlightening climates
do indeed continuously co-arise change,
invite flexibility of WinWin responses,
but these are changes that have traditionally favored health
and disfavored pathology.

To continue following your optimal light
is to become pilgrims of inclusive global health,
inside as outside,
gradually expanding Golden Rule awareness
to include intent and praxis and real-world cooperative/competing with, not paranoid against
ecotherapeutically ecoconscious ecological ecosystems
ecopolitically richer
and denser
yet lighter and happier
outcomes
that continue optimizing,
by avoiding extremes of fundamentalist maximizing Anthro-egos
and radical minimizing of Earth’s cooperative potential without us.

I suspect that universalists see Yang-optimizing monocultures where unitarians see Yin-nurturing polycultures; and we are all both Left-Universalist Egos and Right-Unitarian Ecos.

Bad Humors Create Victims

Good Humors Create Healers

Humorless weaponed officials
applying laws
to challenged and challenging
unarmed natures,
is like expecting a rabid rattlesnake
to advocate with and for patience,
understanding through merciful listening,
to apply active love’s empathic trust,
which no just law, or practice thereof, could prohibit.

The truth of complex situations,
so necessary to uncover for wise application of our ethical codes
for ecopolitical behaviors,
is best accessed by vulnerability of co-empathic trust,
active listening,
Basic Attendance,
as is intelligent good humor.

Loss of humor’s mutual equanimity
is an ominous spiritual and natural sign
Yet another rabid rattlesnake
with too little more moral intelligence.

If you are feeling like delivering toxic venom,
rather than inviting kindness in return,
then probably best to stay home
and curl up on a warm rock.

Hard-hearted criminal intent
to neglect and abuse others
is not softened or redeemed
by anything less or more than orthopraxis of loving kindness
with a smile, as possible.

Those who expect citizens to behave civilly,
best mentor what they would optimally hope to see
on our streets and roads
and life’s Business As Usual highways
and byways.

Front-line customer service to those suspected,
or even known,
to struggle with sociopathic tendencies,
cannot be optimally effective
by treating them to further misdemeanors of humorless
cold-blooded
sociopathic
paranoid rabidity.

Are you in our shared health business,
or in our anger/fear pathology too-busyness,
or both?
If both,
which vocation seems to bring you,
and the rest of us,
better ecopolitical outcomes?

Dillen’s Continuing DMV Adventures

I wrote a sad but true urban legend called “Dillen and the DMV” last week.
Here follows an update.

Background Review:

One of my health care employees, Dillen, has wicked ADD, borderline intelligence, not qualifying for disability supports, which are few
and those few minimal at best anyway,
but also challenged by things like getting to work on the right day at the right time,
challenged by processing verbal communications,
whether written or spoken more slowly than Business As Usual pace and pattern would permit,
challenged with struggles to establish and maintain healthy positive social relationships,
much more challenged by intimacy,
so often settling for companionship that does not foster mutually therapeutic co-mentoring,
challenged by his felt urgency for speed while driving,
challenged by States Attorneys who persuade him it’s OK to accept guilty as charged
for driving 45 in a 35 mph zone on his way to work,
never mind that so were all the cars in front of and behind him,
not to worry that this will inevitably result in a 3-month suspension of his license
because he can get a Work Permit,
except, oops,
never mind,
the DMV will not give Work Permits to suspended drivers
with more than three moving violations,
encouraged by State Prosecutors to go right ahead,
send in that Work Permit application
with his $100 nonrefundable fee
because the DMV is really all about punishing DUIs,
of which Dillen has none
because he doesn’t drink
because, in part, he knows it is bad for his mental health,
especially his chronic issues with depression.

In “Dillen and the DMV” I write to the DMV Commissioner,
the Chief States Attorney, and the Attorney General
about this series of unfortunate events.

Update:

I hear back from the DMV.
This letter patiently reviews Dillen’s multiple infractions.
Two involve having others in his car with marijuana or concomitant paraphernalia,
(why not just “supplies” or “equipment”?)

“Marge, did you order the paraphernalia for the copier machine yet?”
Word choices in the public sector often distract me.

but Dillen was not charged with driving stoned,
because he wasn’t.
He was the designated driver for his “friends”
who did not have their Medical Marijuana cards on them.

Then there was the time he might have been going 35 or 40 and hit black ice,
totaled his car
which ended upside down,
for which the local police felt they must issue some form of moving violation,
after all, we do have those towing charges
and the need for all those emergency folks to stand out in the freezing ice storm,
and there are these two drug-related violations on his driving record
so he was probably stoned anyway, right?

And then there was this time,
when Dillen was pulled over
ostensibly for speeding,
but really this was about driving on a suspended license
without a Work Permit
which he didn’t have because
(1) DMV didn’t have a current address to send him his notice,
so he didn’t know he was driving on a suspended license, and
(2) no one had told him,
including the Police Officer who pulled him over,
there is this Work Permit thing
which would have covered his butt
on this particular adventure in high speed suburban crime.

However, this letter from the DMV Director of Programs leaves out some details,
as does my summary.
Then the Program Director reassures Dillen and I of her concern for Dillen’s mess,
which someone else might have called unemployment
and yet another round of couch-surfing homelessness,
but CT’s pesky State Statutes wouldn’t allow her to refund his application fee,
and, besides,
the application form says right on there that it won’t be refunded
even if the application is rejected

Apparently for reasons that remain in the shadow of the public eye.
My two page letter was too subtle for government comprehension
of our own collective abuse and neglect.
She confirms the DMV does have explicit standards for rejecting applications,
including more than three moving violations,
but fails to apologize for designing her Program’s communication plan
to be sure that disproportionately young urban minority low-income males
with mental health and self-medication issues
would be fleeced of their last $100
ripped out of their hungry pockets
to apply for a Work or Education Permit
that State Statutes prohibit her,
so sadly,
from handing out like mother’s milk to a starving baby.

She also does not speculate about why State Prosecutors Dillen has met
are all apparently unaware of stipulated public, but effectively private, criteria for rejecting
pricey applications.

She also fails to mention what she might do to correct this situation
of not providing transparent public information
in a way that allows respected residents of the State of CT
to make a fully informed decision about wasting their money
by further investing in the future miserable outcomes
of shoddy DMV Programs.

She also does not explain where we,
the tax-payers of CT,
were when concerns about the need for job security,
especially for those in hard-to-employ populations,
where we were when needs for food and housing,
healthy wants for continuing education and training,
including the need for continuing education and training,
including the need for reasonable transportation,
even in the winter,
where we all were when these were not being weighted sufficiently against risks,
allowing licensed drivers with complex histories
to continue on their journey
the best they can.

Personally, I know Dillen responds much better to a warm hug,
a patient smile,
and expressed appreciation for continuing to improve,
and encouragement to continue with work
and sticking with a healthy daily routine,
which does not include speeding,
even if everyone around him is racing to nowhere good.

Yesterday I was mesmerized for several hours by a TV series
“Underground”
about the Railroad prior to the U.S. Civil War.
A champion anti-slavery attorney
confesses to his Northern wife,
as a younger attorney he used to settle estates,
including estates of slave-holders,
which sometimes led to the awkwardness of arranging for resale of people,
families,
often resulting in the tearing of children from their mothers’ arms,
and other similar heinous crimes against nature
and mental health.

For some reason
I kept thinking about that clerk at DMV,
reading Work Permit applications,
after depositing the enclosed nonrefundable $100,
looking at the high security publicly invisible list of reasons not to help
depressed people living mostly in their cars
have a modestly better chance at life,
as if what is a right for him or her
on his or her way to work and home again,
is a too luxurious privilege for a fragile at-risk criminal population,
enslaved by their need to self-propel their freedom futures.

Dillen and the DMV

TO: CT Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner, Chief States Attorney, Attorney General

FROM: Dillen Dye’s Employer

RE: Some apparent non-compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act; common courtesy, civil respect; freely accessible pursuit of health, happiness, and prosperity

I don’t know where the States Attorney Officers and the administrators of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) were hiding when the Americans With Disabilities Act issued regulations protecting us from things like bullying, intimidation, failure to disclose information, discriminating to the disadvantage of those who have more than their fair share of disadvantages pursuing those values our Constitution explicitly mentions as meriting our mutual protection.

One of my employees now has a five year troubled history with Officers of Other People’s Peace and the DMV. The latest episode is a denial of his application for a Work Permit, submitted with a nonrefundable $100 application fee, which he can ill afford, especially given this denial requesting the great privilege of driving himself to work during the duration of his currently suspended driver’s license.

How his license became suspended is a long and troubling history of miscommunication between DMV and State Attorneys who seem to assume it is their job to represent the healthiest interests of everyone in the State except the one resident they are currently fleecing, but also troubles between Dillen’s hyper-deficited mind and right foot.

A quick skim of the American With Disabilities Act might cause reasonable people to take the position that Dillen should either receive the Work Permit that the State Attorney told him he would get if he would simply bother to apply, or have his application fee refunded. After all it does seem difficult to justify he received fair value for his $100 investment in a public system that has at best ignored, and at worst messed with, his private system, getting through each day and night without further suicidal ideation.

This past May, the State’s Prosecuting Attorney was a surprisingly happy young person, probably not all that long a member of the Bar, and it was getting late in the afternoon on a perfectly lovely late Friday afternoon. She came close to begging Dillen to pay a bargain basement reduced moving violation fee of just $400 if he would just agree to cancel his date with the apparently beleaguered, and perhaps not in such a great mood, judge. In fact, if he would sign up for a guilty as charged notice going to the DMV, so they could suspend his license yet again, but not to worry because they would surely jump out of their collective skins to give him a free pass to drive to work and school whenever he needed, because after all we are all good people and we want those good things to be happening in your life, if he would sign up for this line of bullshit right now, she would knock off another $100 because she could see he was such a cooperative kinda guy and wouldn’t it be nice to get out of here and enjoy the rest of his day, if not maybe quite so much his life?

She didn’t mention any problem about now having 7 violations on his DMV record so investing $100 in the Worker Permit application would be delusional, at best. She didn’t mention that AfricanAmerican 20-year-old Dillen, driving a beat-up looking van in a rather lavishly comfortable ecopolitical environment, had cars in front of him and behind him also going 45 mph, but apparently he was the only one unaware he was driving on a suspended license, because, after all, how could the DMV send him a notice through the mail that would actually get to him—although email would have most certainly worked—due to his nomadic ways.

So, yes, Dillen has more than three moving violations, but probably would not, if he had been told, upon his first Suspension, that he could apply for a Work Permit to drive despite Suspension. This was news to him, as he was about to begin his third Suspension, although he has yet to receive his first Suspension Notice.

Apparently no one, except perhaps the person whose digital signature appears at the bottom of the Denial?, knows about this three strikes and you are out of a $100 non-refundable application fee. He saw no notice specifying possible reasons for denial. Nothing in red, or even black, ink saying: WARNING, If you have four or more moving violations do not waste your money!

Yesterday, Dillen had an appointment with yet another State Attorney. This, a few hours before receiving the denial notice from DMV. When Dillen told him that he was waiting to hear back from DMV about his application for a Work Permit, this Attorney too was remarkably sanguine, saying something like “Look, you have no DUI on your record, we want to get you on the road for work and school.” So they continued his case, hoping this latest Suspension would be over, license restored, and Dillen could move on, put this self-propelling mess behind him.

Dillen, State Attorneys, and I are all surprised and disappointed to learn of this covert restriction on issuing Work Permits. And I am his employer. Or was, but now that he has no way to get to work or pay his rent, I suppose my reaction was supposed to be: Well, who’s next?  I believe you should give him his permit or at least refund his extorted application fee. What utter stupidity to increase homelessness and risks of serious mental health issues when we could simply issue more Work Permits!

Not to blow this out of all reasonable proportion, but to add larger and longer perspective, this denial of Dillen’s application for a Work Permit is only the latest episode in his five-year troubled history with driving safely and responsibly as part of his moving into independent adulthood profile. Dillen’s level of sensory-neural challenges and his motivation to live a reasonably accommodated life, without intimidating-bullying Police Officers and inscrutable labyrinthine DMV communication issues, and fee extortions that could not possibly pass any discriminatory effect legal challenge, are concerns we might all approach with better implemented concern and integrity.

Conversation with Chris Santos-Lang

My internal conversation with you, Kramer, Bressan, and all our microbes, together, in brackets.

What “Letting People [and Places, including Earth] Be Themselves” Means

In “Humans as Superorganisms: How Microbes, Viruses, Imprinted Genes, and Other Selfish [Mutually-Struggling] Entities Shape Our Behavior,” Peter Kramer and Paola Bressan present evidence that we are [nondual] “not unitary individuals,” but rather “collections of human and nonhuman [RNA/DNA-regeneratively syntaxed] elements that…in an incessant [cooperatively contentious] struggle [default as positive ‘with’ and sometimes ‘negative reverse-synaptic’ against], jointly define who we are.” The research they highlight challenges those of us who want to ‘let people be themselves’ to explain precisely what we mean by “themselves [and ourselves.” If people are [nondual] not unitary individuals, then what could “themselves [as ourselves]” refer to?

The notion that we are not unitary individuals is not new. [Plato didacted the interdependence of intrinsically social beings, and the neoplatonists went wild with that core holonic universal view.] Quantum physicists have pointed out that every atom of our bodies is entangled with the entire universe [inclusive of both Bohm’s Explicate Order and Implicate Order and Buckminster Fuller’s Convex-Positive-Special Case v. Concave-Double-Bilateral-Reverse-String-Temporal Metaphysical Interior Eco-Cooperative TransParent Function-more or less], biologists have pointed out that less than 2% of those atoms remain in us for over a year, and psychologists have pointed out that the mechanisms of our [positive] cognition typically extend beyond our brains to include scratchpads, musical instruments, calculators, and the Internet [and extend back through time toward the distant progenitive-as-regenerative origins of fractal-syntaxed RNA]. Kramer and ressan add merely that our [economic] values [as objectives] and [political] preferences [as subjective progenitors]–what we call our “soul”–is just as entangled with our environment as are our other aspects.

In my opinion, the most compelling branch of their argument is the one relating to microbes. Only about 10% of the various types of [RNA/DNA fueled] cells our bodies require to flourish are [DNA] human. The rest are [RNA-uracil-rooted] microbes. Although most of the microbe studies cited by Kramer and Bressan were conducted on mice, it seems clear that the decisions humans make–how we vote, whom we marry, whether we commit a crime–depend upon which microbes dominate our internal [autonomic] ecosystem at the time. Thus, we can lose our [perception of autonomous] identity–the person our friends know us to be may cease to [monopolistically] inhabit our [mind-]bodies–not just through a lobotomy, but also through some combination of antibiotics and probiotics which irreversibly [or reversibly? I wonder?] tip the balance of power among the microbes within us.

Such microbes might be called parasites of our [mutually parasitic] bodies, but they cannot be parasites of [with?] our selves, for they are an essential part of who we are. Kramer and Bressan would argue that our rights belong to our entire internal [and external] ecosystem[ic landscapes], including those microbes. Laws to protect you [and Earth] must therefore take the form of laws to protect an ecosystem, not necessarily protecting particular microbes, but protecting [mutually parasitic reverse-hierarchically structured, increasingly cooperative metasystemic, with bilateral (concave/convex) spacetime, co-prehensive] balance among them. This sets the stage for shocking reform of our legal system and conception of human [as nature’s spiritua/ergodic/ionic/cogravitational] rights [of freedom to cooperate balancing freedom from struggling-against competition of Other].

Perhaps the paradigm of “selfish-survivalist” genes has been unduly influenced by a culturally jaundiced interpretation of Darwinian evolutionary struggle. But the default setting on Darwinian evolution is positive-regenerative, which would suggest struggling with others to maintain co-gravitational balance, perhaps defining what I mean by eco-normic cooperation. Nature’s biological systems seem to struggle against mutually negative {lose, lose} eco-gravitational disbalancing choices, which might be paradigmed as competitive eco-politics. Struggling is normatively neutral; “selfish” is not, and assumes a monocultural level of competitive-default objectives that is not supported by the regenerative fact that cooperative polyculturally organic nature, life, exists at all.

Summary Notes, Dillenbeck:

Cooperative economic subjects lead toward competitive, politically-healthy, objectives of eco-consciousness.

Struggling with suboptimized relationships avoids over-attachment to a moderately-healthy Win-Lose poly-econormic status-quo.

Struggling against suboptimally dissonant-yet-static relationships avoids over-detachment from a perceived-as-toxically-competitive (over-heated/drama climate) status-quo.

You may note that this economic view of eco-valent optimization strategies includes both the PC (0)-Core ethical implication (2), an embellished Golden Rule, and the Binary-Prime, or TrimTab, Principle of Systemic Regeneration (5). Oppositional corollaries are implied, for the first four, and actually included in the fifth PC strategy; basically avoid sociopathological assumptions of scarcity and competition for positive values. So, these could be expanded as 10 PC strategies.  For example, the 3rd strategy implies do not rape Earth as a competitively valued commodity for anthropocentric ownership, or enslavement.

Strategies 4 and 5 are reverse corollaries or appositional, if you will; Janus faces of each other. If we optimally and inclusively pursue the TrimTab Principle, then positive/negative value imbalances will self-minimize. But, when they do, they trigger the local CQI evolutionary filter, regenerating a local TrimTab (special case) solution. The TrimTab Principle is bicameral Yang proactive and Yin preventive design perspective. The 4th strategy is regenerative Yin socioeconomic therapeutic response to negative anomalous competitive excess trends in economic, value-transfer, ecosystems.

This is a regenerative pentanomic system because it includes the growth cycle from

seed, yields

species generation, yields

global polyculture, yields

Universal Intelligent Design, and

the reverse corollary, remedial therapy, to apply when the polycultural growth cycle produces anomalous monocultural wealth deposits and growth-yield deficits. These deposits may be viewed as positive, within the anomalous monoculture, but negative throughout the more inclusive polycultural (0) Core Prime Root Relationship systemic filter of eternally regenerative discernment, development and design.

(0) Core Prime Root Relationship is a binary metric in-forming system, speaking a permacultural language of Tao as regenerative process, very old indeed, but reincarnated recently as “Zeroism”: The Universe, and all systems, emerge not from an atomic nuclear noun, but from a mutually self-perpetuating synergetic verb relationship between Yang-(+e) and Yin-(-e) [Dark Energy]. This expresses a positively-dominant slow-constant dynamically re-fusive harmonious relationship; a reverse flow evolutionary trajectory away from dark entropic chaos, dismay, and hell, I suppose.”

“Any questions?”

The room was silent, so this was my opportunity: “Well, I recently took a look at the Rick Raddatz Pentanomic Theory of Government. He seems to define social equity as maximizing the utility of resources; that’s what a well-functioning, just economic system will, or could, at least eventually, achieve.”

Without missing a beat, Norton responds, “Yes, true enough, but the ethical problem with utilitarian economics has always been that it leaves open the possibility of declaring justice achieved without inclusively responsive peace. Our positive teleological hope for value system economies is not just for the majority to survive, to achieve equitable distribution of scarce resources, but for fulfilling sufficiency-participation in global value itself. Nothing less will achieve peace at a global scale.

We hope for vibrant internal and external ecologies. Yes, vibrant ecologies must include equitable resource transfer wisdom. But, what about developing synergetic relationships between values, resources, nutrients, information and communication systems, learning, creative expression, well-being, health? Ecological justice hopes for regenerative, vibrantly dense, rich, resonant, resilient, synergetic integrity, opulent paradigmatic optimization; a CQI standard for justice, yes, but also active peace and joy and beauty and goodness, worth, inclusive merit and well-being. Grace ecologies include fair and sustainable resource economies internal to each identity and external within SuperEco Information, now, and for future generations, inclusive of all species.”

Now, he was getting less academic, more passionate.

“Economic justice truncated from a graced ecology of peace and redemptive mercy for emergent monocultural anomalies holds no positive teleological function for a cooperative learning and mutually-mentoring culture over a competitive culture.  A merely mechanical metaphor does not distinguish between relationships of win-win holistic intent, and relationships consistent with win-lose strategies; although they can work for distinguishing between win-lose and lose-lose strategies.  This is not enough for optimizing regenerative ecosystems.

Anyone who studies natural ecosystems recognizes that when a system becomes a competitive environment of scarcity its flow and frequency functions and trends are pathological. Sociotherapy is the reverse trend and energy–a cooperative economy of synergetic faith in mutually-mentoring abundance, evolving rich and deeply vibrant polycultures.

Avoid mechanical metaphors; natural system analogies offer far more realistically predictive depth and texture, and they can distinguish between global win-win cooperation and more nationalistic win-lose myopic design elements.”

After a reflective pause, “A  natural system filtering analogy that comes to mind is water the flowers of cooperative intent, not the weeds of competitive practice.

Graceful Turkeys

The Eagle card is the first of my numbered Medicine Cards, as Eagle’s powerful spirit is #1 in our U.S. culture.

We hold eagle feathers as the most sacred of healing tools. Shamans used these to cleanse diseased auras. Eagle medicine is achieved through good old fashioned all-American bootstrap hard work and the personal power of completed production.

The issue for eagle medicine is right use. We have opportunity to broaden our sense of self, soaring beyond the horizon of what is presently visible. Myopic egotism and hubris are too narrow for the vast vistas of Eagle medicine.

If the Eagle is our nation’s Yang spirit, then he calls us to balance with the Give-Away Eagle; Turkey medicine is our Yin spirit.

Give-Away cooperation is the reverse side of Eagle’s Take-Away power. Turkey medicine recognizes that sacrifice to the bone of need is fuel for the fat of want and take and have and own and mine. The pot-latch redemptive ceremony is counter-cultural for Eagle dominance, played with win-lose game assumptions. Give-Away culture assumes no tribe or species can win our economy game unless all needs are met. Mutual subsidiarity premises our active peace principle of solidarity. Only win-win cooperative strategies merit Turkey’s Give-Away grace.

In Turkey’s hunted hungry haunted eyes, a person with wealth deposits has fat deposits which is not only selfish but insanely dangerous. Self-centeredness is bad for our physical and mental health, and not sustainable for the entire flock of flocks. Excess wealth is a cultural embarrassment within the Turkey Tribe. Where one bulges with excess power, nutrition, medicine, fat, others fade and strain in dissonant decay.

The word poverty is always relational. I am poor as compared to, well…., almost everyone, but choose any millionaire on up through multi-billionaire who comes to mind. My 19-year-old chronically unemployable son is poor as compared to my assets and opportunities. We do not use the word poor so much when we are talking about an entire tribe or species confronting chronic lack of sufficient resources to thrive, to regenerate. We are more likely to use words like epidemic or risk of extinction.

Turkey medicine reminds us that if our culture applauds engorged Eagles as normative role-models for ourselves and our kids, then it becomes less likely that these kids and their kids will sustain and thrive. Fat turkeys end up on other species’ thanksgiving tables.

Turkey’s grace is the understory of Eagle’s incarnational equity and strength for justice and liberty.

Give-Away Grace reminds us that an eye for an eye may be metric power balance but not social justice, or rationality.

Grace reminds us that an eye for an eye leads to bicameral blindness.

Grace sees that if you have lost an eye, then so have We.

Grace reminds us that we are in this mess together so justice always responds to injustice by asking “where did we go wrong together?”

Our loss of even one eye is a teaching moment for the human flock to rally, to gather and gobble our way toward protecting our flock. We are each responsible for containing the loss and giving the medicine of mercy and forbearance and regenerative redemption in the gift of our flurry of feathered response. Grace shares the turkey’s shyness by shunning where Eagle’s Law would punish with despair.

Turkey’s grace sees the wisdom of minimizing loss by optimizing effectiveness.

Grace recalls that my loss of eye is a stimulus that would also become a response only by doubling the loss and initiating an infinite reactionary string of unraveling disarray, chaos, dismay, death, declarations of war and malignant intent. Turkey grace pauses to recall that each stimulating loss is half of an emerging justice issue that need not be constrained by the failure of the first half. Grace further recalls that each stimulating loss was also a “second-half” response to earlier events or absences of giving when sharing was needed.

Give-Away Turkey culture compassionately shares our shame that we have created such an unfair flock and environment that we would rob ourselves of mindfulness in our rabid thirst for revenge. Turkey medicine remains mindful of the suffering, longing understory within compassion, empathy, synergy, belonging.  Turkey grace knows that victimizing others is always self-victimizing as well, it is a hurtful sacrifice to be avoided.

Active peace is non-violence of thought and word and deed, but it is also the relentless invitation to co-passioning minds, which Christians call love, and philosophers have called integrity, or even synergy.

We are an Eagle iconic culture started by a flock of active peaceful Turkeys. As before, so after. May win-win strategic responses to fear and loss and hurt fall like rain; may I begin again within each moment, thought, word, and mind-enriching action.

Standard
