Sustaining Health

Who said?
Health isn’t about politics!
Health shouldn’t be about politics!
Health should be above partisan politics!

Healthy systems
are not about unchanging purity
and safety
and traditional dogma.

Healthy ego and eco systems
are much more about diversity
and courageous curiosity

Just as wealthy economic networks,
local through global,
include ecological interrelationships

We might associate resonance
with polyculturally robust interactions,
personal and political,

Multiculturally resilient
dynamic stasis–
Slow inclusive
and diversely intricate
climaxing inclusive diversity

Avoiding the monocultural purity
and calculating sobriety
of a 100% crabgrass landscape,

Or 100% concrete

Or 100% saltwater environment
with no above water healthy ecosystemic landmass
embedded in prehistoric
pure and safe
powerful but unenlightened


Retiring Nomad River

I finally finished retiring four years ago,
a process that started in my mid-fifties
due to late adopting kids with special needs,
including needs for me to be home
to personally walk them on,
harness them in,
and wheel them back off, their diverse buses
and robotic ramped vans.

During those final weeks of quasi-gainful employment
I amped up my search for a new home
preferably in New London, CT,
because I had visited, and liked, All Souls UU;

But, possibly in Norwich,
where I have some family,
not necessarily white like me,
or someplace more rural

Long story short,
which is not like tangential me,
I ended up
or started out,
depending on where this story starts for you
and me
on the south end of Norwich,
just north of the old State Hospital,
seeking healthy justice
above a steep and brooding bank
down to the troubled Thames River.

From here
it is difficult not to notice
how traffic flows
between Norwich and New London.

But, in the case of All Souls UU
and UU Norwich,
not so much,
maybe not enough.

When I lived in the Hartford area
I joyfully attended the Unitarian Society of Hartford,
a fairly large multicultural tent
filled with reviving gospel music.

So, when looking for a retirement destination,
I traveled on-line to uua.org
to see what might be available
in addition to All Souls New London
and found a small cell,
apparently renters quasi-homeless,
Norwich UU,
or UU Norwich,
or maybe both
I hope.

I pictured no choir,
no active faith formation options
for people of all ages
and figured,
probably not right for me.

Long story maybe a little bit short,
it took me over four years
to make my first Norwich UU visit,

I found somewhat fewer of us
than the number of Norwich residents
on the All Souls Members and ActiveAllies list.

My background is in cooperative economic
and affordable housing development.

With an MDiv from a Catholic seminary
and a double-Master’s in Public Administration
and Community Development
from Southern Illinois,
where Bucky Fuller once taught

It feels awkward
to invest in All Souls together
where all souls are welcome,
by commuting back and forth alone in my blue steel truck,
while there is clearly plenty of room
and welcome
available right in my new home town,
where I now know no one except family,
over four years later.

This is a schizophrenic discomfort
for climate activist
and cooperative local community investor

Back in my early adoption years,
I worked in the Office of Urban Affairs,
New Haven,
for the Archdiocese of Hartford,
where I listened to a great deal of turmoil
about aging and poor urban parishes
thinking about how to join forces
to survive
while sharing a clergy ministry team.

So, I wonder
How would it feel to UU Norwich survivors,
healthy and smart registrants to vote local
while thinking global,
to carpool to All Souls on Sunday mornings,
to sit together
in chairs hooked to-gather,
perhaps joined by us other emigrant immigrant
Norwich residents already All Souls affiliated,

To also share a discussion circle
after the chalice light is extinguished
to check in with each other over coffee,
maybe herbal tea,
to reflect on what we heard
and sang
and sometimes endured, today,

To ponder aloud how this speaks
and does not speak
and how
and when we arrive together
back in Norwich,
having solved
and resolved to absolve
most of the Thames River watershed issues
rolling back and forth
and swelling in-between
this tidal river’s ups and downs.

Perhaps some of us
or even all of us
would also like to form a Sanctuary Circle
meeting during the week.

Maybe have lunch together,
share our Norwich organizing
and multicultural explorations together,
contribute to All Souls Green Sanctuary
and GRACE anti-racism projects,
restore justice to replace retributive injustice,
speak power with truth,
live together, not apart,
more resiliently.

Perhaps it is possible
to grow more robust
as a distinguished part
of All Souls,
combine resources,
economize cooperatively,
ecologize more holistically
and theologize more healthily
without losing Norwich UU tradition,
green and black and brown and rainbow

As for me,
I’m still looking at New London
real estate listings
while troubled about abandoning
a nomad’s home
in which I never let myself fully invest

While dreaming of emigrating further south
downriver toward climatically rising water levels
while still in my first five carbon-burning years
of retiring immigration.


Theological Traditions

If scriptural exegesis
is also theology as ongoing process,
and process at least hopes for progress,
then no surprise
that Process Theology becomes explicitly evolutionary,
and, more precisely,
a revolutionary regenerative v degenerative emerging process
of polypathic consciousness.

Herein lies an eco-intelligence
if deductively patriarchal dominant–matriarchal submissive,
then also matriarchal bilateral flow inductive;
these two nondual dipolar co-arising
cooperative more than competing bipolar competitive,
capitalist ecopolitical ego-centric,
Might of God’s Jealous Vengeance
Makes Right
as dualdark understory
of ParadisePromise
Ego/EcoProcessing CoOperative CoOwnership,
WinWin BiLateral,
Ionic/Bionic BiNomial.


Christian v NotChosen

Life does not necessarily mature into timeless love,
just as yeast is not the entire evolutionary journey for bread,
and the Way may be part of, but not the entirety of,
the Beloved Community.

It is so interesting, for a nondualist at least,
that a profoundly radical Jewish teacher
would say He is the yeast
while We are the embodied bread;
He is the Way,
yet We are the Kingdoms and QueenEarth Shabbats at hand.

Then the men turn it around,
get it all dualistically, cause-effect backwards,
while the women probably knew this Messianic mentor
as bootstrapping our evolutionary fulfilling birthing process
of incoming and oncoming and ongoing cooperative co-messianism.

The patriarchs,
with theo-means not-ecological words in hand,
were too invested in their post-revolutionary need to distance themselves
from the then-powerful elitist threat of Judaic cultural power,
at least by comparison with their post-revolutionary
dualist-fundamentalist Either/Or departure
into before-Christ/after-Christ messianism-already-fulfilled
by the One
who taught himself as the intentional mentoring leaven,
and not the entire cooperative organic co-salvific loaf;
as the only Way He could speak of and for,
but not our entire EarthTribe Garden
of cooperative ecotherapeutic
co-redemptive messianism at hand.

Too bad the wives and mothers,
the nondualist gatherers and not so much the dualist hunters,
didn’t have the education,
or perhaps even the verbal communication skills,
to write down their creolizing nondualist fulfillment narratives
of cooperative nurture,
to recall and cast a nondualist Messiah
who did not come to kill YHWH’s Chosen People,
or His own culture,
the regenerative history flowing through his humane-divining
but to leaven with these Elders,
those who had no ecopolitical Win/Lose self-centered elitist hypocrisies
like the Pharisees and Sadduccees,
those who were not over-invested in the competitive change of Caesar’s coin
from useful for cooperative consuming health
into iconic-only value for producing disembodied hoards of wealth,
and to leaven within us
as one continuously multiculturing
organic creolizing mindbody
of regenerative intention
and vast ecopolitically radical compassion;
like yeast evolving divinely humane bread.


Wedding Questions


Yes, dear.

When a woman and a man get married,
why does the woman traditionally stand on the man’s left,
rather than his right?

Most men are LeftBrain right hand dominant.
So they’re used to keeping that hand free
of unfortunate encumbrances.

You’re not very nice.
That couldn’t possibly be right,
or left, for that matter.
More likely they keep it free to take care of themselves
especially if they’re getting married for the first time.

Or the second, or the third…
But, how is that different from what I said?

So, when two guys or two women get married,
how do they know which one stands on the left
and which is on the right?

Maybe they flip a coin.

Would heads, then, stand on the right
and tails on the left?

why do you think I would have the first clue?
Honestly, I suspect it has taken them so long
for us to be OK about how they untraditionally lie down together
that nobody, except you, is yet even wondering
how they should stand up together.


Biconceptually Healthy Political Climates

With Julian Jaynes
we find an egocentric languaged LeftBrain
developing reasons to sacredly love our healthy RightBrain inductive-integrative SacredPower feelings of Earth’s co-relationship with LeftBrain’s Self-ReGenerating Identity
of BiCameral Ego/Eco-Consciousness.

Later on in the evolution of Positive Psychology,
we find Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
with competitive egocentric dominance
too often ecopolitically suppressing RightBrain flow of integratively abundant,
healthy as also wealthy,
regenerative more than degenerative Positive/Negative Psychology.

Then we come to George Lakoff’s concept of economic and political “BiConceptualism”
which also dynamically evolves nondual co-arising bi-consciousness
of ego-conservationing eco-progressive flow:

“If you have a single, all-encompassing worldview, you use the same basic [healthy bio/ecological systemic] values all the time. It’s easier to be a total conservative or [and] a total progressive [through bicamerally mature-regenerative, confluent rather than dissonant, integrative Left/Right development].”

“But given a human brain,
it can be almost as easy to be biconceptual–
except that moral contradictions do occur
and resolving them does take work by the [cognitive dissonant] brain,
in particular the ventromedial prefrontal cortex [which is the same struggling with/against place Julian Jaynes identifies with reiterative empathic/antipathic maturational evolving of bicameral ego-humanLeft with sacred-ecological Elder Right nurture-systemic-flow consciousness].”

“Biconceptualism is made possible by the [bicameral] brain. First, there is mutual inhibition [either-or messages of mistrust, mutual immunity],

“Can there be authoritarian progressives [YangLeft-YinRight multiculturally-formed and polypathically-functional mature, regenerative absorbing degenerative subclimates]?
In a word. yes.
One reason is that [phylogenic formative Yang] means and [nutritional-ecological Yintegrity] ends can function as different [regenerative health] domains [hemispheres] of experience.
Thus one can have [health-wealth] progressive ends but [Yang LeftDominant] authoritarian conservative means.
One can even, in the extreme, be an authoritarian [yang-patriarchal hierarchical competitive power-over] antiauthoritarian [yin-matriarchal cooperative flow multiculturing nutritional intent].
Imagine someone who runs an advocacy [climate regenerative health] group that is antiauthoritarian [pro from-below nutritional responsibility for/with integrative flow co-arising nondual empowerment] in its [ecopolitical nutritional polypathic multiculturing climate health] goals,
but runs the group itself in an authoritarian [from-above supremacist LeftBrain EgoDominant] way.
Certain union [and faith and health and economic and political] leaders may be hierarchical and punitive in their [Yang LeftBrain dominant] methods,
but [cooperative] progressive in their [regenerative health co-empathic] aims….
There is a name for people with progressive goals and conservative authoritarian [Yang-exegetical (yintegrity-repressed] means: militants!”

[rather than multicultural,
nurturing self-with-other cooperative co-redemptive WinWin empowering,
co-empathic trusting,
co-mentoring bodhisattva
bicameral polypathic advocates;
more Right-embryonically and yet less Left-egocentrically
midway in-between wu wei
bicameral seen and heard and smelled and sensed and loved and traveled.]


Optimal Wins

What words do we choose for maximizing our ultimate accomplishments,
achieving our healthiest goals,
proportioning our 100% successful therapeutic outcome projections?

Why do these words,
and our feelings about these choices
wave in and out of optimal happiness and prosperity,
even when quantitative measures suggest our historical maximums
continue to trend up and up toward infinite irresolution?

We say we could become anything,
but do we mean we might achieve everything,
every power,
timeless omnipotence?
How do WinWin ecopolitical norms
accommodate WinLose evolutionary imaginations?

like environmental therapists
and holistic medicine practitioners of new life out of old deaths,
favorably contrast polycultures with problematic monocultural outcomes.
Weed patches, essentially,
where you intended your front yard garden
and which may infest where you intended to grow your healthy ego identity.

We might hope to become more polypathic achievers
by acclimating to less egocentric monopolistic gestalts,
climates of self and other awareness becoming atrophied subclimates,
aging hoary traditionalists of thought and faith concomitant feelings,
calcifying empathic trusters of ego’s always limited
health v pathology hour by hour,
day by day,
decade by decade,
life by life contests, comparisons, contrasts,
each and all co-arising.

Yet, like Yangish competitive power over others
and Yin’s gooier cooperative internalized power with others,
these opposing bilaterals
are also dynamically recycling appositional revolutions
within and without climates and subclimates
of intricately networking change,
searching for optimal,
not maximal extreme fundamentalist,
but optimally sustainable healthy tensegrity, synergy, therapy,
softly contentious contentment,
peace through responsible and mutually-held flexibility,
in-between competition and cooperation and victimization,
in-between LeftBrain deductions and RightBrain inductions,
in-between monocultural ecopolitical maximization of human ego-natures
and polycultural ecopolitical cooperative minimization of all Earth’s Living Natures
lies a vastly complex, often feeling chaotic, overwhelming
regenerating middle ground,
an in-between Tipping Pointed recycling networks of issues and platitudes,
a wu-wei spatial place of ego/eco-mind,
collective ecoconsciousness
and RealTime WinLeft/WinRight flexibly enlightening
endeepening thermodynamic balance.

In this in-between shadow place of becoming healthier balancing identities,
monocultures begin to look like what remains
of former polycultures,
artifacts of cherished Elders,
and what could continue to become part of a new wealthier
ecologically balancing multiculturally thriving future.

What looks like monopolistic alien powers over little benign-ego me,
begin to look like what remains from our former shared polypathic
ecotherapeutic identity
hoping toward future powers with each other person and species,
imagination’s deja vu of a felt monopolistic forever compost
nurturing perfectly and deepdarkly enriching Black Holed wombs
of embryonic time’s regenerative evolutionary integrative
reweaving promise,
never beginning
and ever ending
timeless ecoconsciousness.

Truth with beauty natures of enlightening climates
do indeed continuously co-arise change,
invite flexibility of WinWin responses,
but these are changes that have traditionally favored health
and disfavored pathology.

To continue following your optimal light
is to become pilgrims of inclusive global health,
inside as outside,
gradually expanding Golden Rule awareness
to include intent and praxis and real-world cooperative/competing with, not paranoid against
ecotherapeutically ecoconscious ecological ecosystems
ecopolitically richer
and denser
yet lighter and happier
that continue optimizing,
by avoiding extremes of fundamentalist maximizing Anthro-egos
and radical minimizing of Earth’s cooperative potential without us.
