It’s hard to think in Either-Or Deductive,
while speaking and acting in Both-And Inductive.

For example,
If my Brother is kind and loving
(and he usually is),
and really not all that judgmental and condemning

and if he understands himself

he might become concerned, on occasion,

when I found my RightBrain offering further nuance;
not to deny what is here,

Custody of the Eyes

Monks and nuns,
ascetics and miscellaneous humble proletariat folks,
were taught custody of the eyes,
to show respect for those older
and/or wiser
and/or more supremely royal,
and/or in other positions of merited or inherited authority,
to avoid appearing too curious
too available
too interested,
to avoid temptations
of lust and envy and gossip,
to avoid that part of our reality show
that was only meant for the real adults
in our extended family rooms and screens,
creeping across hedge and boundary and custody-paradigm issues
of who is worthy to be in and who not-so-much.

African-American sons and daughters of enslavement,
were taught custody of the eyes
and ears,
and nose,
and hands,
and mouth,
and mind,
because what may be nutritious for WesternWhite Entitlement folks
is what is inappropriately dangerous for nonWhite dependent nonfolks.

Custody of the senses, including the eyes,
is a form of risk management
and precisely what healthy, curious polypathic trusting people
would never ever choose to do,
to enrich not only our own curious multiculturing eyes,
but also to do our part to facilitate
therapeutic opening of our EarthTribe extended families’

Custody of the eyes,

To CareGivers and Receivers

I hope we all at least aspire to become adept caregivers and receivers,
as these two directions seem to be nondualist,
mutually symbiotic;
to give care is neither better nor worse than to receive,
as optimal healthy care giving is also receiving–
these interactions mutually feed and enrich each other.
We call this healthy and growing love.

The best care giving comes out of love and nurturance,
not merely the exterior forms of ego discipline,
the ego-control of negative emotions and thoughts.
Love sublimates negativity,
often with humor at our own ecoconsciously mindful deep learning expense,
co-investment,
looking even deeper at this relationship in this time,
and learning to share this Basic Attendance
in a nondual spirit of co-mentorship.

Put another more therapeutic way,
health care professional training has invested in attorneys
and insurance bottom-line profit-seeking,
risk-management corporations,
to articulate how to defend oneself,
one’s practice,
one’s relationships,
from inappropriate touch and language and aggressive behavior.

This is not a bad thing in our WinLose ecopolitical economy,
but it is the less compelling side of our WinWin opportunity-optimization potential
for both caregiving and receiving
which is all about how to therapeutically touch and speak
and derive maturing empathic consciousness.

Both strict conservatives and progress-nurturers can agree
that our GoldenRule caregiving-receiving journey
within this health v pathology Earth climate,
through both internal and external landscapes of ecotherapeutic touch and language,
is how we further evolve together
toward optimizing WinWin health,
regenerative caregiving-receiving,
communicating with hands and feet and mouth from within mutually cooperative empathic trust.

As this conversion occurs and re-occurs and concurs,
then life becomes all about WinWin optimizing appropriate touch.
Too long enduring issues of WinLose inappropriate touch
become artifacts of a prior benighted millennium,
a former age and stage and life,
our progress-conserving regenerate Elders would not wish stuck upon us
or our great-grandchildren of all Earth’s species.

Revisiting Extended Family Values

I began reading Jane Anna Gordon’s “Creolizing Political Theory”
from the back toward the front,
as usual,
because if I appreciate where this narrative journey will end,
then I probably will find we start off with similar questions
of economic and political urgency right now.

And, also as is my dialogical custom,
I am working my way through George Lakoff’s “The Political Mind,”
this morning starting his chapter on Family Values.

Here is what happened to my parenting political minds,
both the LeftBrain rational-deductive dominant,
and the RightMind matriarchal-familial nurturing,
cooperative Yin-nonWestern,
as Gordon might prefer,
and seems to conclude:

“Dallmayr…warned first against ‘imperialist modes of theorizing,’
in which one portion of the [competing rather than cooperating]globe
would monopolize the production of hared means and practices
that should ‘only arise from lateral [Right is bilateral, while Left is vertical-hierarchically deductive, empowered exegetically from above] interaction,
[co-mentored, co-operative] negotiation,
and [struggling with but not violently/aggressively against] contestation among different,
historically grown cultural [evolutionary compete/cooperate] frameworks.’
In addition,
he advanced,
worldly [familial-matriarchal-domestic] theory would emerge out of a middle course [Taoism: wu wei = MidWay, in-between]
between the methods of [geosystemic] abstract generalists
and of narrow [biological ecosystemic] specialists,
neither through seeking ‘indiscriminate [yin] assimilation’
nor radically untranslatable [yang-independent] otherness.”

“…[A]s evident in the instances of Aristotle,
Machiavelli,
Baron de Montesquieu,
Charles-Louis de Secondat,
and Alexis de Tocqueville,
[Gregory Bateson,
Buckminster Fuller,
Albert Einstein,
Teilhard de Chardin
George Lakoff]
theory transpires out of journeying to alien political [yet extended familial] worlds
that stir a critical [empathic] sense
of the peculiarity of one’s own [monoculturing] institutions,
challenging their seeming [exegetical] inevitability
by nurturing [new bilaterally eisegetical, polypathic] self-understanding
that grounds an enlivened [RightBrain] sense
of [yang-cooperative with yin-integrative] possibility.”

“Euben stresses that comparative politial theory cannot rely upon
and should endeavor to challenge
any perception of [extended familial] cultures
as radically distinct
or hermetically sealed.
Countering a dangerous tendency also comparing Western [nonEastern?]
with non-Western philosophical writing
fosters the misperception that these traditions developed in parallel [silos],
independently of one another
[rather than also containing mutually empathic interdependencies]–
Euben focuses on ambivalent treatments of Western modernity
in Arab thought
illuminating internal [both/and] fissures in both that belie their presumed [exegetical ecopolitical] opposition
[as more eisegetically appositional tensegrity (B. Fuller)].”

“If historical designations [LeftBrain deductive labels and frames]…cannot simly be dispensed with,
since they are forms of represenation embedded in [RightBrain] mythologies
that anchor our [ecoconscious] understanding…
and, however imperfectly,
remain short-hand for [extended familial] constellations
of [ecosystemic] sources,
issues,
and [ecopolitical] methods of argumentation [acclimation (G. Bateson)]
that while constructed through post factos [symbiotic] agendas
produce family resemblances and recognizable attributes…,
they still obscure messy [chaotic, unresolved, dissonant]
and interpenetrating histories [which are also potentially nutritional herstories,
understories within our larger ecological MotherEarth frame].”

“After all, argues Euben,
the possibility of engaging in comparative [familial] discussions
is a function not of radical [competitive-deductive] difference
but mutual [cooperative-inductive] indebtedness of worlds
not juxtaposed as [theoretically, paradigmatically] discrete.
In the case of ‘the West’ [nonEast cultural dominance]
and ‘Islam,’
both are fundamentally shaped by Semitic [patriarchal, from-above universal empowerment] traditions,
texts considered classical within Europe [extended families]
were reintroduced to its readers through preserved Arabic [extended family Wisdom Literature] translations,
and the Golden Age of Islamic thought
was defined by efforts to forge syncretic [YHWH patriarchal] fusions of Greek and [pre]Islamic [Arabic ecopolitical familial-tribal] resources.”

And here’s what happened while continuing my Family Economic and Political Values discourse
with Lakoff:

“Why do certain people,
most of them self-identified as conservatives
[of monoculturally supremacist heterosexuality]
find certain acts of love–
premarital,
extra-marital,
or homosexual–
more [extended family] sinful than war or torture?”

“Why should a [LeftBrain ego-supremacist] conservative
living in the Midwest
find it personally threatening when gays get married in San Francisco or Massachusetts?”

“Why doesn’t a [health and safety utilitarian survivalist] conservative government
take better care of its veterans,
and why don’t [conservative self-condemning] veterans
and their families rebel en masse?”

“Why do progressives feel a sense of responsibility for righting the wrongs
of past generations?”
[Because we hope that’s what our kids
will do for their kids?]

“And why should we find progressive and conservative values
and modes of thought outside of politics proper–
in kindergartens,
Little League coaching,
churches,
summer camps, and so on?”
[And who said these are not ecopolitical paradigms?]

PolyPathic Political Populace

In another millennial time and Chinese/Russian place,
Taoism began as aphorisms and poetry
about political philosophy,
articulating a bicameral tension
between Conservative Yangers,
patriarchal universalist ego empire builders,
and Unitarian Progressive Yinners, WinWinners,
a matriarchal cooperative
polypathic
multicultural
integrative network of nurturers,
(the longer the list of adjectives and adverbs,
the less important history would prove us to become cooperatively disintegrated)
empty of any sectarian-deductive labeling,
and supremacist framing, function.

Hence, everyone knows the principles of InterdependentYang and EmptyYin,
and usually metaphorically associate them with Male and Female,
and Positive and Negative,
yet few have economically and/or politically defined
the governing power of Tao.
We have the Tao of most everything,
without necessarily being clear about what the label Tao
adds to most anything.

In another millennial time and New England and Baltimore place,
Reverend Channing proposed to replace the Holy Trinity
with God the LeftBrain Dominant patriarchal EgoFather[Mother],
with universalist regenerative credentials of deduced historic effectiveness,
and the RightBrain Unitarian matriarchal OverSoul
of Grace
and Flow
and Karma
and Princess (0)-Sum Prime Relational Energy
of ecoconscious integrative potential,
all four nondual sisters co-arising cooperatively together
in ecopolitical health
and bicameral safety Paradise
of DNA with RNA Solidarity in fractal-nutritional seasons
with reasons of regenerative health,
Original Tao Intent.

Or, something LeftBrain Universal God
and RightBrain OverSoul EcoConscious Unitarian
like Yang Ego discontinuous competitions
with Yintegral EcoIntegrity CoOperative Networking
and WinLose evolutionary model of mutual degeneration
with WinWin ecological model of regenerativity.

It is this Unitarian 0-sum RightBrainBody OverSoul
that Reverend Julian Jaynes explores
as how we are prodigal son and daughter and transgender Egos,
and OverSoul Atman PolyPaths of EcoConsciousness,
Prodigal Unitarians
progressing Ego health and safety Conservationism,
played WinWin with LeftBrain ego-centric
ecological discernment of optimally cooperative evolution
rather than BusinessAsUsual LeftBrain idolatry
of competitive capitalistic revolutions,
and concomitant WinLose violence
in the name of peacemaking,
and pathological lack of long-term consciousness
in the name of climates and landscapes of and for healthy freedom,
optimally self-liberating safety,
nurturance,
regenerativity,
polypathic integrity.

“…[T]here is something else to be observed
as you study your own [prodigal bicameral] nature.
It is a something of supreme importance….
Suppose you observe [several of ego-you] in your daily consciousness,
now one,
now the other
asserting itself in thought and behavior;
who is it,
let us ask,
who is it
or what is it
that does the observing?”

Polypathic ecoconsciousness
of time’s flow,
regenerative and too often chaotically Left-Right dissonant.

“Are you not conscious of still another [Elder RightBrain] self,
larger and more inclusive than the others,
that seems to be standing outside watching them,
counting them,
criticizing them,
applauding them?”

OverSoul,
Atman,
holonic matriarchally cooperative face
of Father Patriarch LeftBrain.
Brahma is Tao of Gaia.

“Who is it that wonders?”

Which God and/or Goddess do you most idolize
as RightBrain BiCameral OverSoul?

“There are times when you fall so completely into the possession of one of these smaller selves [Ego-ideals],
that you lose all consciousness of the one [Earth-Matriarchal ReGenerator] watching outside.
It is only afterward that the presence of the [Gaia-Climate OverSoul] watcher
is seen and felt.
There are other times
when the [ecoconscious] watcher
seems to be on the guard [silent defensive-dissonant-repressed] all the time,
and while the lesser personalities [LeftBrain Dominant ego-idols] are having their way,

You may call it [prodigal] conscience,
or moral [polypathic] sentiment–
anything you please.
I like to give it the name I have already used
and call it the real
or the larger [OverSoul, RightBrain EmBodied NonDual CoArising] self.”

A rational matriarchal Gaia theistic belief
in an Original ReGenerative Source
could be both theologically universalist
with regard to root source of divine intelligent ecopolitical empowerment,
and teleologically secular-unitarian
with regard to evolutionary Omega Point
of humane polypathic healthy,
wealthy,
and rationally co-mentoring abundance.

Both history and science,
our own eyes and ears,
remind us phylogeny is polypathic
across both DNA and RNA branches
of our regenerative tree of life.

So it is our Earth’s systemic ecology is polyculturally progressing
across all economic/political nutritionally positive/positronic relationships.

In this post-millennial time in Gaia’s growing climate pathology,
Tao means Conserve/Progress ecopolitical healthy climates
of positive cooperative regenerativity,
resonantly inside as reiteratively outside,
below as above
before Space as after Time
positive as double-binding negative
Yang as YinYin
WinWin (0)-sum PolyPathic Prodigality.

Touched by Kindness

An outrageously warm full moon
radiates above my roof
across our yard,
my face and mind,
reminding me Earth’s nature can and must sometimes feel kind
if last week’s hurricane of snow felt unkind
to aging joints and internal family tensions.

My Taoist roots remain disarticulated on this theme.
Controversy of dissonant and alien natures cannot be kind
because Earth is not kind.
Yet too often taught,
I feel this full moon glow across my tearing mind,
that nature is unkind
and so it is our nature to compete to survive,
rather than cooperate to thrive,
along with all Earth’s Golden Ruling creatures
and ecosystems.

And yet this narrative,
left removed from other half,
distorts who we are sometimes,
who I am at my best and healthiest,
and least competitive dissonance,
because in 0-sum Taoist nondual co-arising philosophy,
where there is an unkind Yang
there must also be a kind Yin
or how would we know anything of kindness,
positive or negative opposition,
yang both/and yin apposition
full regenerative kindness and empty unkind promise.

This warm January moon will darkly empty,
yet fill again
to touch my heart,
our hearts,
with Earth’s kind and healthy Promise.
