Allah and Buddha were Talking

You know what I think sometimes?
said Allah to Buddha,
Of course you do
and yet you don’t.

I think I gave this gift of language
because you have a uniquely humanatured gift
of comprehending
and transposing
and translating languages thru-out each and all Earth tribes,
but primally amongst your anthro-Allah loving selves.

Buddha thinks
we under-invest using this cooperatively intended gift
to speak clearly
and honestly
with candid integrity
about what “I need”
and what “I really do not need more of,
or any longer.”

Perhaps at work
in your vocation
you get along fairly confluenty,
most folks act professionally
and politically
and socially
and economically
and ecologically
and healthily correct.

Yet, notice
next time
perhaps even within yourself,
within your family,
with your spouse,
with your kids
especially with those teenagers,
how much time do we invest
prattling happily
and sometimes ranting unhappily along
about what we want or wish for,
don’t want and would never care to see
or hear
again;
now compare to your investment
conversing about what you most need
and what you most critically,
yet also chronically,
most specifically do not need
in your healthy intended and practiced life,
and in your death-trending non-life
of falsely wealthy abundance.

We might turn to our professional colleague at work
say “I could use a cup of coffee.”
but we would probably never say,
“I need more stimulants in my system
or this situation will put me to sleep.”

We might say to our oppositionally obsessed daughter,
“If you throw that one-eyed Zoe doll down the stairs again
in the middle of this clunky throbbing night,
you can predict her immediate demise
in the trashcan of life!!!”
but seldom think to say
“I need for us to figure out a less alarming way
for you to wake me
when you need my attention.”

Why are we more comfortable
telling our life partners,
“I don’t feel like it tonight”
and less comfortable adding,
“but a back and foot and scalp massage would be heaven.”

Seems like we would all be somewhat healthier
wealthier
and wiser
if we were more articulate
about our bodies’ “need” language
while less reductively focused on
our little ego’s cognitive “want”
“don’t want” messages.

And, for that matter,
Allah adds
it might be nicer
if your national and global political conversations
followed this same trend
of ecological body integrity
with Buddha-mind communication patterns.

Rather than
“If you keep killing those innocent victims,
I’m going to spank you
and starve you.”
as if you had not had quite enough of both
rather than co-mentored love,
what about,
“I do not need you to lead us toward more death.
I do need you to do what we elected
and supported
and expected you to do,
to facilitate positive health and wealth trends

Dearest Cooperative Ego

When Oliver dropped out of high school, after his sophomore year, he went to UConn. We never understood why, other than the obvious, that the main campus was our back yard, and he didn’t like to drive, or use toilets outside our home.

He thought the whole academic degree industry was suspiciously rooted in Win-Lose Game Theory assumptions, which didn’t necessarily have to be true if we would all just wake up some morning and decide to go with Win-Win instead. Even so, he sailed through his GED exams and then spent over a year deciding whether to take some classes at UConn, or just continue writing prose and lyrics and gaming on-line with his intercontinental team, with a representative from each populated continent except Africa–an exception that he found not just irritating but actually embarrassing.

About the time he was deciding not to go back for his junior year, Oliver shared his “Dear Ego” letter with me. We were both surprised, I think, because he almost never wanted me to read his work, or play, as he preferred to think of it. But, this one he correctly thought I would find helpful:

Dear Ego

Please notice that “evil” is not only “live” spelled backwards, but it also is backward, or the reverse of, healthy living.

You do your evil, not-live, acts to test me, to learn justice, when you are wise enough to listen to our eco-logical response.

You evil out of ignoring y/our larger interdependent identity, to discover your individual and collective responsibilities, potential integrity, how and when and whom both live and not-live choices coalesce and differentiate.

Evil is about what and whom we don’t do and become that we could do, we could become, with sufficient power, individually and collectively.

You do not do evil to learn the causes and effects of generosity, to uncover our individual v. collective accountability for gratitude, for mutual redemption.

You both do and do not evil to mutually mentor fair balance of redemptive generosity, mercy, kindness, giving care, nurturing; to evolve Us, your SuperEco Co-Intelligence, to proactively practice peaceful resolutions, love’s fully inclusive resonance through time’s healing, synergy’s revolution.

I don’t know if this was a suicide note, or why I found this copy in front of his cold not-living, but still generously beautiful, body. It’s not even clear to me that Oliver’s death was a suicide, at least not as we usually understand this violence and sadness and despair against one’s future.

The medical examiner said he had never seen anything like it, although he had read an account of a chronically depressed dolphin living in captivity, who signed farewell to a favorite caregiver and then simply stopped inhaling air. Apparently that’s what Oliver did, or chose to not do anymore.

I miss Oliver’s deep beauty, his humor, brilliant integrity, even his profound sadness about our climatic disarray, our chronic insufficiency of loving the cooperative juice of eco-logical health flowing through his veins and neural system.

How I wish that I could redeem his not-live lack of healthy loving environment enough to persuade him to take in one more breath. But, Oliver was always like that. Not confidant that he deserved to breathe the polluted air he inherited from me, from us, from our choices.

I wish we had planted trees together. It was lonely planting that weeping willow in the ashes of his cooperative evil choice.

On Eco-Logical Economics

If you have not read Riane Eisler’s “The Real Wealth of Nations” (2012) and John Michael Greer’s “Wealth of Human Nature” (2011), please do at least read one or the other.

Eisler thinks it is time to replace an overly-dominant, capital-based, competitive cultural understanding of Business As Usual Means Marginalized Lives Don’t Matter, evolved through the Industrial Age. She contrasts this with our “real”, but undervalued wealth of nurturance and care-giving. This is an explicit feminist perspective on economics and the logic and balance of ecologically-informed economics. My only complaint is not about what she has written, but about the “sin” of omitting all the vast financial and cultural research on co-operative economics, which seems to incorporate values for recycling, repurposing, rehabilitation, zero carbon footprint lifestyle intentions, as well as the organizing of co-operatives around child care, elder care, household cleanliness and order, landscaping, cooking and preserving, gardening and farming.  These are all cultural elements of what Thich Nhat Hanh would encourage us to think of as a nurturing-nutritional economy v. a domineering-toxic environment of oppressing and suppressing our natural and ecological instincts.

John Michael Greer’s analysis of our capital/commodity competitive Business As Usual economics-as-financial-transaction monopoly and monotony is entirely symbiotic with Eisler’s blistering critique.  His alternative trend view is more eco-logically focused as a logic that is our undervalued HUMAN natural wealth. If we follow what is ecologically rational more, and avoid further investment in what is merely more competitive ego-investment of an anthro-culturally supremacist species, we may have more sustainable hope for our collective future. Like Eisler, however, Greer fails to take that one additional ecological step, to notice that organic living nature is essentially co-operative until the point when trends start moving toward decay and devolution.  Economics, whether competitively-rooted in Win-Lose capitalist Game Theory, or cooperatively-rooted in Win-Win positive evolutionary Game Theory, is relational network praxis of ecological systemic intent, continuing our cultural revolution toward comprehensive consciousness.

Transactions and relationships are synonymous as reiteratively equivalent communication strings of memory and cultural history, whether we are speaking of micro-economics, or macro-economics, or both.  Our prime ecological assumption is that we live in a positively co-operative evolutionary environment, too often troubled by negatively competing Win-Lose strategies and logistics assuming a shortage of “wealth” resources, which may be reminiscent of Anderson’s “Emperor with No Clothes.” If the socioeconomic and too-long encultured pathology of over-valuing competition are precisely what point to their own nakedly devolving and decomposing future, then hope dawns with this red horizon; our socioeconomic therapy is a deeper permacultured economics of co-operative ecology, design, and developmental praxis.

At the micro-economic personal and familial and local community levels, I have found the following areas of discernment on “Win-Lose Competition Economics” v. “Win-Win Co-Operative Economics” useful:

  1. Purchasing decisions: Housing, transportation, utilities, food, insurance come immediately to mind as having rich potential to benefit our shared environment and my personal checking account and the quality of my relationships with family and neighbors when approached with a “Group Purchasing Co-Operative” intention.  When do I need a car and when do I not, and do I know other people, or is there some way I could get to know other people, who might answer that question in a way that is mutually compatible with my answer?
  2. Investment decisions: Insurance shows up here again, with retirement investment, and even regular savings and checking account relationships with financial institutions and companies who will use my payments to invest in what, exactly? I am increasingly uncomfortable with knowing that many insurance and financial corporations are taking my capital and investing it in Business As Usual, especially as it occurs to me that there are ways to invest in cooperative funds investing solely in my region of habitat, excluding those businesses with toxic outcomes for our shared environment, other species, and also for their employees, and giving preference to investments in worker- and resident-cooperative ownership.
  3. Relational decisions: While purchasing and investment are also relational, we usually think of them as transactions. So, this broader category continues to evolve on my own path toward a more comprehensive ecological co-operative consciousness. How do I choose to respond to messages from my own family that betray contention between egocentrism and eco-logical balance?  These are at least potential opportunities for some rich conversation about what we value, including sustainability of life, and what we disvalue. As I am now well-immersed in my twilight years, it becomes increasingly obvious that what I have always enjoyed about my internal contentions is how they have a way of resolving most resonantly when my egocentric left-brain embraces my ecocentric right-brain’s intuitions for right-relationship, for what is, after all, transparently eco-logical.

Eisler and Greer both point to some public policy and priority changes that would help each of us sustain our ego-eco alignment. I agree with all of this agenda.  I further believe that the principles and ethics of Permaculture could be more broadly applied to any evolutionary paradigm for relationships, transactions, actions, being and becoming on planet Earth, within our bodies and families and neighborhoods and ecosystems. Some principles that feel permacultural, but may not appear in your sustainable agriculture text:

There once was a species competitive
so heavy it paused their co-operative,
when ego turned round
then eco rewound
and Earth grew collaterally revolutative.

he noticed our bicameral brains
our Left sends petitions
to Right’s primal conditions
so confluent brains think in trains.

who found dominant economics quite duller
than intelligent co-operations
for networking our nations
to grow optimal Tipping Point rudders.
