Custody of the Eyes

Monks and nuns,
ascetics and miscellaneous humble proletariat folks,
were taught custody of the eyes,
to show respect for those older
and/or wiser
and/or more supremely royal,
and/or in other positions of merited or inherited authority,
to avoid appearing too curious
too available
too interested,
to avoid temptations
of lust and envy and gossip,
to avoid that part of our reality show
that was only meant for the real adults
in our extended family rooms and screens,
creeping across hedge and boundary and custody-paradigm issues
of who is worthy to be in and who not-so-much.

African-American sons and daughters of enslavement,
were taught custody of the eyes
and ears,
and nose,
and hands,
and mouth,
and mind,
because what may be nutritious for WesternWhite Entitlement folks
is what is inappropriately dangerous for nonWhite dependent nonfolks.

Custody of the senses, including the eyes,
is a form of risk management
and precisely what healthy, curious polypathic trusting people
would never ever choose to do,
to enrich not only our own curious multiculturing eyes,
but also to do our part to facilitate
therapeutic opening of our EarthTribe extended families’
ecologically deep-nutritious, bicameral nurturing, eyes.

Custody of the eyes,
risk-management, anger-management, fear-terror management,
does not invite the curiosities of appositional loves,
invitations,
mutual gratitude for still emerging sacred-cooperative humanity,
natural/spiritual nondual dignity,
integration of our potential
for more regenerative,
self/other acclimating,
Earth-Secular/Sacred multicultural health integrity.

George Lakoff reminds us that
“Most people’s first [custodial] experience with governance
[of the eyes and all that eco-bio system that lies bicamerally behind]
is in their family.”
[Here I would pause to extend this family’s self-governing timeline,
back to embryonic beginnings,
Pre-Left-Dominant language development,
to suggest this is where our within-matriarchal family governance
experience first began,
then out, from there,
into identifying a LeftBrain dominant individuated EgoIdentity,
also bicamerally structuring confluent/dissonant polarities,
but also stepping back in time,
now,
suddenly realizing this bicameral-nurturing Ego’s
freedom of eye and mind and ears for those who can hear
Earth’s ecological vocation toward inclusive multicultural health,
echoes RightBrain Elder memory,
DNA encrypted,
RNA co-mentoring nature-spirit root systemic intelligence,
regenerative health
ecopolitical commonly-held conserve-progress senses
that could never work with full regenerative intent
while confined to custody of this EgoIdentity’s marginalized,
repressed,
suppressed eyes.

“Your parents govern you: they tell you what to do,
what’s good for you and bad for you,
and what’s good for the family;”
and, if you are of great glad good health fortune,
how to deep nurturingly learn to love self/other regeneratively,
and why we take care of our health best together,
cooperatively,
rather than LeftBrain ego-centric competitively,
leaning toward fearsome sociopathology,
expecting lesser paranoid beings to practice
custody of the eyes
and to respect YangHubris right to enforce condemning violence
against less enlightened minds and too-liberal bodies.

“In a family,
the means of making sure they [custodial self-governance norms] are carried out
are, positively,
by expressing affection [and curiosity of mind about differences,
diversity,
multiculturality,
plurality,
branches of the family further removed
back in time,
and perhaps currently enslaved and commodified
by competitive LeftBrain aggression
in some oppressively custodial way,
ready to revolt from long-practiced custody of anthrocentric eyes
blind to our healthier regenerative nondual relationships,
denying most of Earth’s enspirited sacred ecosystemic natures],

fulfilling desires [especially those emerging from

by withdrawing affection,
social isolation [such as custody of the eyes],
denying desires,
instilling guilt or shame,
or physical [condemning powering-over aggression of mindbody ownership, proprietorship, Yang-hubris] force.”

Freedom from custody
is also bicameral freedom to customize,
to acclimate to our shared sacred-secular primal ecology
of mutually cooperative health and safety,
empathic trust,
Basic Attendance of all nurturing sensory communicators,
living within ecopolitical communities.

PolyPathic Political Populace

In another millennial time and Chinese/Russian place,
Taoism began as aphorisms and poetry
about political philosophy,
articulating a bicameral tension
between Conservative Yangers,
patriarchal universalist ego empire builders,
and Unitarian Progressive Yinners, WinWinners,
a matriarchal cooperative
polypathic
multicultural
integrative network of nurturers,
(the longer the list of adjectives and adverbs,
the less important history would prove us to become cooperatively disintegrated)
empty of any sectarian-deductive labeling,
and supremacist framing, function.

Hence, everyone knows the principles of InterdependentYang and EmptyYin,
and usually metaphorically associate them with Male and Female,
and Positive and Negative,
yet few have economically and/or politically defined
the governing power of Tao.
We have the Tao of most everything,
without necessarily being clear about what the label Tao
adds to most anything.

In another millennial time and New England and Baltimore place,
Reverend Channing proposed to replace the Holy Trinity
with God the LeftBrain Dominant patriarchal EgoFather[Mother],
with universalist regenerative credentials of deduced historic effectiveness,
and the RightBrain Unitarian matriarchal OverSoul
of Grace
and Flow
and Karma
and Princess (0)-Sum Prime Relational Energy
of ecoconscious integrative potential,
all four nondual sisters co-arising cooperatively together
in ecopolitical health
and bicameral safety Paradise
of DNA with RNA Solidarity in fractal-nutritional seasons
with reasons of regenerative health,
Original Tao Intent.

Or, something LeftBrain Universal God
and RightBrain OverSoul EcoConscious Unitarian
like Yang Ego discontinuous competitions
with Yintegral EcoIntegrity CoOperative Networking
and WinLose evolutionary model of mutual degeneration
with WinWin ecological model of regenerativity.

It is this Unitarian 0-sum RightBrainBody OverSoul
that Reverend Julian Jaynes explores
as how we are prodigal son and daughter and transgender Egos,
and OverSoul Atman PolyPaths of EcoConsciousness,
Prodigal Unitarians
progressing Ego health and safety Conservationism,
played WinWin with LeftBrain ego-centric
ecological discernment of optimally cooperative evolution
rather than BusinessAsUsual LeftBrain idolatry
of competitive capitalistic revolutions,
and concomitant WinLose violence
in the name of peacemaking,
and pathological lack of long-term consciousness
in the name of climates and landscapes of and for healthy freedom,
optimally self-liberating safety,
nurturance,
regenerativity,
polypathic integrity.

could be both theologically universalist
with regard to root source of divine intelligent ecopolitical empowerment,
and teleologically secular-unitarian
with regard to evolutionary Omega Point
of humane polypathic healthy,
wealthy,
and rationally co-mentoring abundance.

Both history and science,
our own eyes and ears,
remind us phylogeny is polypathic
across both DNA and RNA branches
of our regenerative tree of life.

So it is our Earth’s systemic ecology is polyculturally progressing
across all economic/political nutritionally positive/positronic relationships.

In this post-millennial time in Gaia’s growing climate pathology,

Rev. Julian Jaynes quotes are from his “Coming to One’s Self” homily, published in Magic Wells: Sermons…, 1922.  As noted in prior pieces, I read Reverend Jaynes’s theology through his psychologist son, Julian Jaynes, who wrote a seminal evolutionary theory of bicameral consciousness development, very much in synchronicity with Gregory Bateson’s concept of Sacred Ecology.

Biconceptually Healthy Political Climates

With Julian Jaynes
we find an egocentric languaged LeftBrain
developing reasons to sacredly love our healthy RightBrain inductive-integrative SacredPower feelings of Earth’s co-relationship with LeftBrain’s Self-ReGenerating Identity
of BiCameral Ego/Eco-Consciousness.

Later on in the evolution of Positive Psychology,
we find Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
with competitive egocentric dominance
too often ecopolitically suppressing RightBrain flow of integratively abundant,
healthy as also wealthy,
regenerative more than degenerative Positive/Negative Psychology.

Then we come to George Lakoff’s concept of economic and political “BiConceptualism”
which also dynamically evolves nondual co-arising bi-consciousness
of ego-conservationing eco-progressive flow:

“If you have a single, all-encompassing worldview, you use the same basic [healthy bio/ecological systemic] values all the time. It’s easier to be a total conservative or [and] a total progressive [through bicamerally mature-regenerative, confluent rather than dissonant, integrative Left/Right development].”

“But given a human brain,
it can be almost as easy to be biconceptual–
except that moral contradictions do occur
and resolving them does take work by the [cognitive dissonant] brain,

One reason is that [phylogenic formative Yang] means and [nutritional-ecological Yintegrity] ends can function as different [regenerative health] domains [hemispheres] of experience.
Thus one can have [health-wealth] progressive ends but [Yang LeftDominant] authoritarian conservative means.

Certain union [and faith and health and economic and political] leaders may be hierarchical and punitive in their [Yang LeftBrain dominant] methods,
but [cooperative] progressive in their [regenerative health co-empathic] aims….
There is a name for people with progressive goals and conservative authoritarian [Yang-exegetical (yintegrity-repressed] means: militants!”

bicameral polypathic advocates;
more Right-embryonically and yet less Left-egocentrically

Balancing Work and Play

I was reading Rev. Julian Clifford Jaynes’ homily,
delivered May of 1919
to the First Unitarian Society in West Newton, Massachusetts,
commenting on the 100 years since Channing’s Baltimore Sermon.

Rev. Jaynes had a son,
a second generation Julian Jaynes,
who was a rather well published Princeton psychologist
with an evolutionary theory of bicameral LeftBrain intelligence emerging from older RightBrain consciousness.

Earlier in the morning
I had been reading this younger secular humanist Julian Jaynes,
who was also a bicameral mental-health development John the Baptist
to what later became Positive Psychology,
prior to reading Reverend Jaynes’ 100 year perspective
on Channing’s Unitarian slap down
of a vengeful condemning Calvinist God,
condemning the grievous sins of mere mortal humans.

Mortal humans who are also bicameral human consciousness,
as teleologically and ecologically and phylogenically understood
by the younger Julian Jaynes,
only son of a Unitarian Rev,
whose father died a few years after Psychologist Jaynes was born,
and after delivering his historical summary of Unitarian bicameral evolution
toward Universalist-LeftBrain and Unitarian-RightBrain nature-spirits
nondual co-arising between 1819 and 1919.

I developed a distracting habit of writing in additional words
that the younger Jaynes might have added
to describe a dynamic nondual natural-spiritual balancing act
between Universalist Yang EgoConservatives of Traditional health values
and Unitarian Yintegrity of Earth-Regenerating nutrition.

As I began to see through the eyes of Rev. Jaynes reading his son’s theory of bicameral egoLeft-Yang and ecoRight-Yin evolution of balancing nondual co-arising consciousness,
Universal ebbing waves of triumphal unchanging YangTruth Tradition
prepared to surge back toward narrow-midway Unitarian flow
of LeftEgo with RightEco climate balance for abundantly regenerative love,
health, happiness,
economic and political balance
of YangLeft EgoCentering Universal Co-Empowerment
nondual co-arising promise
with YinRight EcoCentering Flow of Both-And
Universalists with Unitarians,
which did not become religiously updated from the Prime (0) Relational Principle of Taoism,
until a few years before Psychologist Jaynes published his treatise on
Positive pylogenic development
of Left-Right Ego-secular/Eco-sacred bicameral evolution.

This is how I added the younger Jaynes
to Reverend Jaynes
speaking about the 100 year influence of Reverend Channing:

“…What terrible things did Channing say?
He declared the supremacy of the human [ego/eco-logical healthy and wealthy trusting] reason.
He put Holy Scripture under the searchlight of rational [LeftUniversal-RightUnitarian] interpretation.
He defended the [balancing] character of God from the old imputations of cruelty, injustice, and the wrath of an irresponsible [LeftBrain EgoDominant] despot.
He broke up the mystery of the Trinity, and behold,

of a universal [and unitarian, WinLeft-WinRight mutual] atonement [economy].”

“That is all!
How mild and familiar it sounds this morning!
How the sweet [therapeutic] reasonableness
of those [co-absorbing LeftUniversal-RightUnitarian] affirmations
condemn the [too Yangish LeftBrain Dominant historic] character
of the theology that denounced them as the [secular humanist, relativistic, rather than primal nature-spirit nondual co-relational] charter of hell.”

“From hilltops to hilltops their [ego/eco-conscious] echoes flew–until in brief time,
one hundred and twenty-five orthodox steeples rocked with their joyous clamor
of [unitarian-yin] acceptance and [universal-yang] approval.
New England was aflame.”

“…[F]or what?
For [ecologically rational] intellectual liberty,
for breaking the bonds of burdensome [static, dead] tradition,
for spiritual [YangLeft-deductive and YinRight-inductive] serenity
in the presence of every new [bilaterally appositional health/pathology] truth,
for daily [regenerative/degenerative] visions
of fresh [healthy ecological] horizons
opening out into a morally sound and beneficent
[Unitarian-integral climate of health-flow] universe.”

“We have seen one other thing–are seeing it now.
It is a [regenerative] revival among ourselves.
It is the awakened sense of [polypathic multicultural] responsibility
to the [healthy balancing natureLeft-spiritRight] faith we profess.
It is the disappearance of our former complacency [about mutual antipathy],
our cozy isolation,
our let-alone policy.
Growing in their place is the strong [Yang-UniversalEgo] desire

to plant the [polypathic bicameral] standards of [health-wealth balancing] liberal religion

Praying with Heschel

“To escape from the mean and penurious [competitions],
from calculating and scheming [WinLose Gaming],
is at time the parching [integrative healthy] desire
of [ecopolitical LeftBrain Dominant] man [sic]…

LeftBrains with RightHearts

LeftBrain ego challenges
are also investments
in cooperatively struggling with RightBrain understream flow,
understories of recreative grace,
positively trending karma,
or against, trying to swim directly upstream,
competing with RightBrain’s laterally co-arising flow skills of integration.

Our moment by ego/ecoconscious moment choices
are in where and how and why
to LeftBrain invest in positive challenge
and/or divest of cognitive negative problems.

While this either-or competition
is actually also both-and cooperation
when we are at our Left-Right best,
most maturely skilled in deep ecological learning,
we lean more heavily into both-and challenges
with RightBrain integrative polypathic multicultural comprehension,
co-empathic co-arising Left/Right mutual-subsidiarity trust,
and more lightly on either-or mistrust problems
with LeftBrain ego and anthrocentrist ignorance
of RightBrain’s timeless understory
of nutritional co-gravitating integrity.

Minds, brains, hearts, lungs, hands, feet
are embodied,
part of an organically healthy,
and sometimes more unhelpfully pathological,
ecopolitical biosystem.

So LeftBrain deductive reasoning,
logical rationality,
is also RightBrain embodied ecological,
phylogenically emerging within holistic matriotic nurturing,
growing out from Ego/Self:Eco/Other co-embodied composting wombs
co-arising nondual polypathic power-with empathy.

Following Julian Jaynes’ ethological theory of bicameral emergence,
and phylogenic historic-memetic evolutionary evidence,
LeftBrain’s polynomially languaged rationality
is primally embedded in RightBrain unlanguaged unconscious
notnot Tipping Point ecological-moral integrity development,
discernment toward multicultural integrity as climate health norms,
ego-values rooted in ecological thermodynamics of living systems.

LeftBrain egocentrism
merges with RightBrain eco-consciousness
as we mature
by extending our empathic skills
discerning ecological health
cooperatively, co-redemptively, co-mentoringly, democratically
by divesting of unhelpful self-and-other condeming pathologies,
an unwillingness to mentor co-empathic “both-and” acclimation;
especially when we feel surrounded by a mistrusting “either-or” competitive, and not quite so healthily democratic,
mutually-condemning,
sometimes paranoid and terrifying,
ego-supremacist environment.

After all,
what else could divine with human natural transubstantiation be,
other than this ecological polypathic stretch
of our multicultural WinWin Golden Rule?

Left to Right and back again,
reiterative enthymematic revolutions
of Left-Explicate and Right-NotNotImplicating-integrating
co-arising polypathic communications of climate health
and notnot dissonant demonic noise?

Radical Conservative Revolutions

Radical conservatives are cooperatively embracing a culture war.
Our battlefield is our ecologically evolving brain.

At stake is what Earth and Earth’s hosted tribes become.
Our cooperative vocation is to radically co-arise nondual human development
to fit conservationist moral integrity.
Our threat is anemically anthrocentric democracy
and all that does not yet flow positive grace/karma through multiculturing integrity;
not just in NorthWestern cultures,
but wherever LeftBrain dominant influence extends
to RightBrain decomposing repression of deep ecological learning.

LeftBrain WinWin values are fundamentally positive-progressive,
centered on equality,
human as ClimateHealth rights,
economic and social responsibility,
and cooperative inclusion of all species
within our reweaving Golden Rule of Earth’s Conservation Rights.

Yet DNA/RNA co-arising permacultural progressives have,
without knowing why,
given DNA-anthrocentrically dominant conservatives an unwitting advantage
in our eco-cultural struggle toward inclusive peace.
Fundamentalist LeftBrain WinLose survivalists,
still wearing evaporating rags of legitimized conservative labels,
continue to hunt and gather
patriarchal authoritarian hierararchies
rooted in vast fear/anger concentrations
and monopolistic control of capital as the sole measure of wealth,
the commodification of health’s potential integrity ourselves;
unbalancing disorder rooted in fear,
bullying and intimidation,
obedience to condemning paranoia;
control of elections and administrations and legislation through control of who votes and who doesn’t bother to cooperatively invest
in our shared future;
and patriarchal family values projected upon religion, politics, and the market,
at the expense of ecopolitical matriarchal nurturing-co-empathic integrative values.

The future of Earth’s climate of democracy is at stake, now.

Social evolution is ecopolitically material–
who competitively/cooperatively controls what forms of wealth–
institutionally ecosystemic–
who runs what nutritionally multicultural/toxically monocultural powers to invest and divest of and for multi-generational regenerativity,
and political competitions within a larger cooperative WinWin network.
But the main front of our climate health culture struggle
is the Left/Right co-arising nondual mindbody,
especially how the bicameral brain functions
below the ego-conscious level of eco-consciousness.

Progressives no longer accept as sufficient
the pre-millennial view of LeftBrain dominant reason,
rooted in evolution as either-or competitions for survival,
dating back through the revolutions of struggling history ourselves,
that reason can be, but is not necessarily, ego-conscious,
both literal and analogical,
both logical and ecological,
both universal and unitarian,
both unemotional and co-arising empathic feelings,
disembodied as decompositional
but primally
regeneratively
ecologically
organically
phylogenically systemic,
serving both egoLeft and ecoRight cooperative conservation interests.

As cognitive and brain sciences unveil,
this is no longer a distorted LeftBrain dominant view of reductive reason.
This may sound like a merely academic issue,
but this assumption about the ecological nature of logical co-empathic
phylogenic comprehension of ego/eco balancing consciousness
has stood in the way of an effective progressive/conservative co-defense
and advancement of polypathic democracy.
Multicultural progressives pre-millennially ceded
the eco-political balanced mind
to fundamental reductivist traditional icons of wealth,
no longer rooted in Earth’s integrity of health.

Our ecopolitically dominant LeftBrain mind
dynamically uncovers RightBrain’s unconscious-unlanguaged modes of politically cooperative thought,
and how these are co-arisingly nondual-linked.

We are each and all climate health experts,
conservatives of cooperative ecopolitical cultures.
