Burning Bodhisattva Tree

Our Tree of Life burns,

self-immolating inside out,

charred stench of commodifying human flesh,

entrapping memories grown commercial,

messages without information,

histories without cultures.

 

Language primally embracing rooted systems in our racing,

breeding search for compost

not yet fracted and extracted

from angry longing

for simply belonging,

seeding Earth’s surface

to recover shade

from our own souled out burning despair.

 

Screaming voiceless stream of speciating suicide,

passion flight of fire.

 

Hard endings measure soft beginnings,

to turn one last time in hope

for faith to love peace sufficiently

to thrive through flame’s winged purge,

singed yet sung snug,

resting nest of painful longing

to fly one last sacred arc beyond

this softly falling dark horizon.

 

We seem to die

to learn to fly together.

Prophetic Water

In the recently published Death of a King: The Real Story of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior’s Final Years, Tavis Smiley reminds us that living a prophetic and integral life does not result in winning popularity contests. While prophets may become mystics, saints, and geniuses post mortem, Dr. King was no exception to the historical rule that no prophet is broadly welcome in his own time.

This thesis reminded me of a Taoist aphorism:

Who receives unto himself the calumny of the world

Is the preserver of the state.

Who bears himself the sins of the world

Is the king of the world.

[Translation by Lin Yutang, 1948, Random House, NY]

 

While Dr. King had gained broad support for his positions regarding racism, as he retained a consistent ethical voice in support of equal rights for women and against the culture of violence and war epitomized in the Vietnam War, he would have had increasing difficulty had he ever aspired to elective office. His allies in D.C. resented Dr. King for biting the hand that they believed had fed him more than sufficiently already. His African-American clergy colleagues often did not appreciate King’s views on the rights of women in society, much less within their churches.

Both Mr. Smiley and Laotse speak to the creative tension between powerful prophecy and effective redemption. The strength of prophecy for redemptive effectiveness, to support regenerative change, becomes compromised by cultural dissonance. Too much cognitive dissonance is dismissed as insanity or marginalized as appropriate for the saint and martyr, but not realistic for universal human nature. Yet as redemptive comprehensiveness is softened, contained, diminished, the prophetic voice is softened for more confluent ears.  Regenerative potential can be largely residual potential; less incarnated.

The cutting edge of regenerative optimization is a rationality that ebbs the flow and follows the flowing-confluent edges  around, and eventually through, the ebbing knots of cultural dissonance. Inviting society into a more rational future becomes more effective through the weakness of optimally ebbing and flowing water, energy; both listening carefully and summarizing astutely the echoes and distresses within historical and cultural trends.

 

There is nothing weaker than water

But none is superior to it in overcoming the hard,

For which there is no substitute.

That weakness overcomes strength

And gentleness overcomes rigidity,

No one does not know;

No one can put into practice.

[Ibid, p. 306]

 

Perhaps no “one” can put water’s wisdom into practice because the flow of regenerative energy is intrinsically interdependent, swelling where there is confluent and sure flow, and cautious and much slower, gently inviting more positive and inclusive discernment, where the diverse sprays of mutual dismay remain more complexly knotted. But, gentle invitation is the land of the facilitator, and not the stand-alone prophet. Active peace-making walks between these two worlds–which Dr. King did rather better than most of us.

Graceful Turkeys

The Eagle card is the first of my numbered Medicine Cards, as Eagle’s powerful spirit is #1 in our U.S. culture.

We hold eagle feathers as the most sacred of healing tools. Shamans used these to cleanse diseased auras. Eagle medicine is achieved through good old fashioned all-American bootstrap hard work and the personal power of completed production.

The issue for eagle medicine is right use. We have opportunity to broaden our sense of self, soaring beyond the horizon of what is presently visible. Myopic egotism and hubris are too narrow for the vast vistas of Eagle medicine.

If the Eagle is our nation’s Yang spirit, then he calls us to balance with the Give-Away Eagle; Turkey medicine is our Yin spirit.

Give-Away cooperation is the reverse side of Eagle’s Take-Away power. Turkey medicine recognizes that sacrifice to the bone of need is fuel for the fat of want and take and have and own and mine. The pot-latch redemptive ceremony is counter-cultural for Eagle dominance, played with win-lose game assumptions. Give-Away culture assumes no tribe or species can win our economy game unless all needs are met. Mutual subsidiarity premises our active peace principle of solidarity. Only win-win cooperative strategies merit Turkey’s Give-Away grace.

In Turkey’s hunted hungry haunted eyes, a person with wealth deposits has fat deposits which is not only selfish but insanely dangerous. Self-centeredness is bad for our physical and mental health, and not sustainable for the entire flock of flocks. Excess wealth is a cultural embarrassment within the Turkey Tribe. Where one bulges with excess power, nutrition, medicine, fat, others fade and strain in dissonant decay.

The word poverty is always relational. I am poor as compared to, well…., almost everyone, but choose any millionaire on up through multi-billionaire who comes to mind. My 19-year-old chronically unemployable son is poor as compared to my assets and opportunities. We do not use the word poor so much when we are talking about an entire tribe or species confronting chronic lack of sufficient resources to thrive, to regenerate. We are more likely to use words like epidemic or risk of extinction.

Turkey medicine reminds us that if our culture applauds engorged Eagles as normative role-models for ourselves and our kids, then it becomes less likely that these kids and their kids will sustain and thrive. Fat turkeys end up on other species’ thanksgiving tables.

Turkey’s grace is the understory of Eagle’s incarnational equity and strength for justice and liberty.

Give-Away Grace reminds us that an eye for an eye may be metric power balance but not social justice, or rationality.

Grace reminds us that an eye for an eye leads to bicameral blindness.

Grace sees that if you have lost an eye, then so have We.

Grace reminds us that we are in this mess together so justice always responds to injustice by asking “where did we go wrong together?”

Our loss of even one eye is a teaching moment for the human flock to rally, to gather and gobble our way toward protecting our flock. We are each responsible for containing the loss and giving the medicine of mercy and forbearance and regenerative redemption in the gift of our flurry of feathered response. Grace shares the turkey’s shyness by shunning where Eagle’s Law would punish with despair.

Turkey’s grace sees the wisdom of minimizing loss by optimizing effectiveness.

Grace recalls that my loss of eye is a stimulus that would also become a response only by doubling the loss and initiating an infinite reactionary string of unraveling disarray, chaos, dismay, death, declarations of war and malignant intent. Turkey grace pauses to recall that each stimulating loss is half of an emerging justice issue that need not be constrained by the failure of the first half. Grace further recalls that each stimulating loss was also a “second-half” response to earlier events or absences of giving when sharing was needed.

Give-Away Turkey culture compassionately shares our shame that we have created such an unfair flock and environment that we would rob ourselves of mindfulness in our rabid thirst for revenge. Turkey medicine remains mindful of the suffering, longing understory within compassion, empathy, synergy, belonging.  Turkey grace knows that victimizing others is always self-victimizing as well, it is a hurtful sacrifice to be avoided.

Active peace is non-violence of thought and word and deed, but it is also the relentless invitation to co-passioning minds, which Christians call love, and philosophers have called integrity, or even synergy.

We are an Eagle iconic culture started by a flock of active peaceful Turkeys. As before, so after. May win-win strategic responses to fear and loss and hurt fall like rain; may I begin again within each moment, thought, word, and mind-enriching action.

Soul Surfing

Chi-soul slowly shapes my custom-developing surfboard,

a Transformer to sustainably ride this peculiar body

across time’s perpetually cresting potent waves;

 

Up, up on rising racing funnel

to fall a misty tear

back into a sea of glee;

 

Embracing my board

slowly sleeking back out to roots of Time’s Tree

succulently grasping back,

invites the two of us to act as one

riding up again

transforming lotus flowered knots

cross-pollinating seeds of future waves

we belong to surge again.

WeSelf Weaving

My intersection, long cherished, was here,

a Rock now self-pummelling,

crumbled shape reforming pebbles

swirling their Great Transition turning

highway ribbons into reweaving paradigms,

newly familiar knots of meaning street

meets purpose avenue.

 

Self identifying functions,

transmutant role-playing ingredients

cross-breed mysteriously green integral individuation,

redeeming source for ancient blood-drenched stories.

 

Morphing paths feed identity and memory assets

and property and relationships and ownership

through a nutrition mixer;

cumbersome ungainly contention

for natural flowing reconstruction,

creating nascent coop-network soup from

resistant gall stoned economies.

 

Individuals resonate into communities

as places relocate into homes

transitioning from mechanical precepts

inductively racing for a well-farmed field

of Commons regenerative theorem,

seed-scattering

self-perpetuating pearls of permaculture.

 

Pilgriming past my familiar mirror,

I slow surprised by unfamiliar faces

behaving as if We were mine.

Tao ReGenesis

In logic, and in metaphysics, + = -(-). Positive polynomial information within any system is binomially negative, which is why each binary field is assumed to be balanced magnetic and thermodynamic polarity [+/-]. The double-negative, double-bind equivalency to the positive appositive side of any spectrum, perception, message, experience is probably why Tao was originally defined as the balance of Yang+ OVER Yin(-). The “OVER” is the fractive line demarcation, our Positive Teleological bias for thinking in positives rather than double negatives, separating our numerator Polynomials from our denominator “bottom line” values, with their self-defining disvalued antitheses. And, all the above may somehow predict that P polynomial = NP non-polynomial disinformation, as two Janus-faced sides mutually appositively self-defining, like Yin and Yang.

The balance of P-Yang with NP-Yin may respectively also reflect David Bohm’s Explicate and Implicate Orders.

In Fuller’s Synergetics, his +e-function (Euler’s binomial crossroad) defines information, in dynamic appositional geometric contrast to recessive, chaotic, irrational, -e-dysfunction.

Mapping this prime relationship (0) Core Vector onto Bohm and the P=NP issue, Fuller defines our Positive Teleological primal vector in a way that is confluent with the primal neural experience of fractally fused synaptic relationships [+Yang] OVER aptic (-)Yin-4-spaciated dimensional self-identity (see Julian Jaynes and David Abram on ethological development of bicameral deductive reasoning capacity as primordial to development of a 4-based geosystemic Original Intent metric assumption, or Omega Point, depending on whether one looks “outward” toward the future Universe, or “inward” toward one’s EarthSelf progenitive evolution toward confluent diastasis.

An appositive polarity of possible interest to both physicists and metaphysicists:

Phenomenal Experience

Each day, moment, life,

each vista,

each situation, gestalt, paradigm

is like a book.

The exterior landscape of experience felt,

seen, touched, tasted, heard, smelled,

is like a book or a video

recording phenomena organized in bicameral ways

our minds can recognize

as confluent with past experience,

with DNA’s exegetical messaged patterns.

We cannot physically see

our memories or our future

although our memories can be recorded,

coded,

using our bicameral information processors

to discern what are confluent phenomena,

and what are not,

what is dissonant but positive,

and what is a painfully despairing loss of hope.

Physics is about sensory message reception,

reading the page of each moment in my life.

Mindfulness and metaphysical phenomena

are about message transliteration

between now and a past we share

within RNA’s string restringing,

positively binding,

revolving yearning for the light

of further growth and evolution.

We fly together

or crawl separately

our choice

to in-formate

or calculate irrationally

too negative

forgetting (0) graced balance

and octave harmonies of imagined flights

with extended family,

birds and butterflies

comets and stars

surfing up and down

around and back again.

 

We fly together, or dissonantly burn and bury

and throw ourselves,

our nutrients,

away…

where they will

eventually

learn to crawl together

toward regenerating flight.

Self-Refining Icon

Nature iconically reveals human spirituality,

as exegesis is to eisegesis.

Our teacher, this currently incarnating Eternal Moment,

developing, regenerating,

from Original Intent through Omega Point;

our promised redeeming Positive intent’s

paradised ortho-practice.

Active Peace, this balance of iconic nature with ionic spirit.

 

We ordain vocations to mutually embrace nature,

including human natures,

to know gratitude and love for each nature,

to gently touch esteem and reverence,

sacred icon of spiritual energy from which we emerge,

toward which we merge,

from exterior to interior and back to reflect exterior landscapes,

to reconnect each individual,

each species,

each community and tribe,

each moment and era,

Dr. Taowl Delivers Commencement Reverie

Our children learn to deserve the parents they get, which is why parents deserve the children they raise.

We need each other less when we love each other more, for who we are now, of course, but also for who we are potentially, in the future. Not one or the other; both.

Because, whether we do, or do not, love our children, or anyone, regardless of species, whether currently alive or not yet, or already gone into their optimal potential, they will trust our actions and passivities regarding their potential value to us, and to themselves, while discarding our words on this subject, which primarily stimulate cognitive dissonance for any child; when not delivered with compassionate mindfulness.

A bit of wisdom from the elders has traditionally gone a a long way toward what is typically the end of a very short attention span.

What Taoists, and maybe other current and ancient spiritual/religious traditions, metrically and nominally presume is a Positive Teleological Faith, and its corollary, that we are intrinsically interdependent in a profoundly evolutionary way toward an Omega Point that strongly suggests, implies, predicts that we will arrive in the future back with our Original Intent. This has an intergenerational cyclic dynamic, our kids treating us with some echoing disdain, “I’m too busy trying to scheme my way toward a more leisurely, and preferably more richly abundant, future than I am about your future right this minute, so please go play amongst yourselves,” that came their way when they were maybe about the ages of 3 to 12, when we finally notice that they are going to be leaving us in a minute and our relationship habit-culture holes are already entrenched. Each generation wrestling to optimize our story by minimizing dissonant relationships, especially primal relationships, like

mother-child, as benign Mother Earth and benignly developing parasites

father-child, extended family,

oldest v. youngest child, middle child ,

intrinsic genetic traits such as regularity of heart beat and lung capacity

strength of eyesight, and foresight, more generally

affective responses to sensory input such as touch

sight,

sound,

smell, taste,

pain-suffering, mutual caress,

restraint, embrace

aptic sense of positive mutual confluence (especially pre-sight/sound) older-brained, pre-bicameral;

information default functions as +0 OVER (-)1.00% QBit dissonance, chaos, Implicate Order (D. Bohm),

unraveling RNA-strictured (or enthymematic, see Robert Norton and David Brenders “Communication & Consequences”) information string self-reproducing, regenetic becoming-pattern of in-forming.

Did I say “my kids” out loud?

Oh.

Well, good, maybe they will hear that as an apology and peace offering; as well as a congratulations and my gratitude for being such patient teachers. May they learn more than they have taught me. They will be wise in deed, and perhaps even wiser in their words. Although this is, of course, most difficult to imagine.
