Democratic Trust

When I drove away from the family farm
to embrace my freshman year
at the University of Michigan
in Vietnam-era 1970,

I was planning on majoring in political science
which later turned into a double major
in communication theory
and positive neuro-psychology

Persuasion,
cognitive/affective bicameral
conserving/liberating bipolarizing dissonance,
and more resonantly trusted
positive therapeutic attitude change.

What I do recall from PoliSci 101:
The well-researched underlying root value
for any healthy,
safe,
resilient democratic polyculture
is not LeftBrain polypathic intelligence
and certainly not more RightBrain
election campaign persuasive beauty,
but profoundly inclusive TRUST

Which,
when I later worked in theology,
rediscovered in what religious traditions
monotheistically refer to as FAITH
and/or
polytheistically embrace as COMPASSION.

Trust also turned out to become
the primary underlying value
for resilient communication
and deeply resonant
mental/spiritual robust health
and neuro-systemic safety

Slow-growing increased capacity
for unconditional regard
of people
and our plants
and our cooperatively-managed planet
developing public health urban areas
and cultivating regenerative farms.

I find it disappointing
and tragic, then,
that our disuniting State schools
coach young democratic residents
in win/lose debate
but not win/win trusted
faithful
cooperatively-intended
nonviolent dialogue.

This may have a causal effect
negatively reproducing Patriarchal-Capitalist
competitive mistrust relationships

Further embedding runaway
vicious circle revenge
militarism
racism
homophobia

criminalizing

Othering justice systems

Lacking robust muscularity
to restore and reward
positive ego-

and anthro-therapeutic Trust

To A Superior Judge

I could not do what you are mandated to do
every day on society’s justice bench,
weighing retributive justice
against restorative healing.

I cannot look at police
and correction officers’
routinely criminalizing vocations,
and injudicious levying of fines
against the young
and black
and brown
and homeless

Punishing prison sentences
for the most obvious trauma victims
of chronic blue-shirt bullying,
theft,
not really clever lies,
racial profiling,
diminishment
and derision by militarized
and miseducated
mercenaries of a rabid Estate.

My son,
now twenty-seven,
was not expected to reach full emotional maturity
until his early thirties,
as evinced by research on ADHD.

However,
that pessimistic projection
may be optimistically skewed,
not accounting for trauma histories
common to significant learning disabilities,
nor a special education black male experience
in a racist and homophobic “corrections” society.

Economic and political maturity
security
integrity
may never arrive at the Promised Land
for the young black male
separated from his birthmother during infancy
to be parented by a mixed-race gay male couple,
having to defend not only himself
but his out gay younger brother
from predative peers
under the radar
of teachers
and school administrators
disabled by “zero tolerance”
means zero compassion
retributive justice
dysfunctional trauma systems.

This is the third time that police officers have failed
to include in their self-righteous reports
that they took hundreds of dollars out of my son’s pocket
and put it in theirs,
and triumphantly reported only a fraction
of the high quality,
organic cannabis found in his car,
while the majority disappeared

Not reported,
not seen,
not returned;
stolen from my young
black
homeless,
high school diploma with a fourth-grade education,
son.

If my oldest son could easily choose to work
at a full-time
living wage job

If he could get to work on time,
on the right remembered schedule,
with a reliable car,
and feel like he was not being judged,
ridiculed,
and bullied by peers
and supervisors,
shamed and blamed for not being smart enough,
clever enough,
quick-witted enough,
middle-class white enough,
man enough,
successful enough,
then he would not choose to spend long hours
and sleepless nights
delivering the only therapeutic self-medication to others
that has helped him numb the pain
of childhood,
community,
chronic post-traumatic stressors
which have led to his current social,
economic,
and political ostracization,
and potential imprisonment.

I am a certified multicultural community mediator,
so my training is about how to most effectively support
those experiencing trauma
and actively looking for restorative peace
and resilient social justice
therapeutic outcomes.

Mediators begin with identifying the victim(s) feelings
safety needs
and healthy wants,
and then explore the probability
that perpetrators too are victims
of childhood,
community,
and environmental
trauma histories,
fraught with
win/lose zero-sum
contextual stress
critical and chronic
non win/win events.

From that lose/lose potential perspective,
my son has been repeatedly victimized
by police officers
defensively trained
to tolerate their own predative
bullying behaviors.

If anyone would benefit from jail time,
and/or fines,
it is the perpetrators of organized,
anti-social crime.

But, again,
from a restorative justice perspective,
blue-shirt officers, too,
have been victimized by a militarized,
miseducated retributive justice system,
rooted in judgment,
blame,
and shame

And not compassion,
curiosity,
and contextual intelligence

Which is why I could not do
what you are mandated to do.

The Mural Project

Education Secretary Ellen,

Some of us
on the EarthCare Team
and also the Transport Solutions Committee
for special projects
are wondering
and, frankly, hoping

Your green STEAM students
and teachers
might research,
design,
and help residents paint
a historically accurate
AND polyculturally exquisite
series of murals

On our two-tiered
upper, more transcendently hopeful,
and lower, more historically faithful,
retaining walls

After our crumbling concrete parking pads
and steel-framed industrial artifacts
are hauled away
with respect and gratitude
for future repurposing

Our Transport Solutions
and EarthCare Elders
hope to use this transitional moment
to divert water runoff
to north and south bermed
and graceful descent
down toward our sacred RiverGaia,
rather than continuing to run
race
to disgrace our wet unhealthy basement

Thereby diverting soiled water stains
from historic runoff narrative face
retaining walled epic paintings,
perhaps combined with etching,
to tell a true and beautiful tale
about this sacred place
where we live
and work,
garden
and enjoy our EarthCare classroom
residence,
inside and outside

As did indigenously wise
Elders before us

And RiverGaia
learned Her future shape and flow
from ancient predative
cold
relentless icey white glaciers,

As will future natural construction

I was in the shotgun seat
in 1960 Lansing Michigan
headed straight as a harddrive
through ghettoizing “Negra Section”
hunting down our commercial whitebread
heavenly ThriftMart,

Wanna be a WalMart
but not Southern enough,
somehow,
to withstand straight-male competition
in fluent White Privileged culture
favoring evangelical
monotheistic
monoculturing AnthroSupremacists

Kinda like
patriarchal-capitalist
anal-retentive pathological trauma
homophobic nature v panentheistic erotic spirit
kinda unenlightened Left unhealthy
and disempowered Right unsafe colonizing wealth
win/lose hoarding
apartheid community trauma dissociative
chronic supremacist anxiety disorders
degenerating unhealthy inside whites only classrooms
contrasting this all black and brown summer outside classroom
feeling shared healthier and safer hearts.

School would soon reopen.

With my window down
I felt
and smelled
his shared fragrance

Students enjoy a question
often wisely asked
especially of teachers
parents
and preachers
who seem not too often recall

If I must choose
which to trust,

for divinely healing reactions,

Like telling your kids not to smoke
in-between stinky toxic puffs,

Which will have primary influence,

of ambivalence
where we had hoped for integrity?

I question how to safely and astutely trust
a source of incompatible verbose
and poignant inaudible messages
brought by legs with feet,
arms with hands,
minds with hearts,
rooted nutritional systems
with sensory complex faces.

What primal communications
are most likely
to miss communion’s full
of grace potential?

Our more obvious EarthTribal point,
we deeply trust only Earth’s naturally
spirited resources,
healing advocates,
ecological green nurturing leaders,
indigenous species of integrity

Like trees
bushes
plants,
blessing soil
water
breezes in integral, sacred forests,
beautiful and true

from a more inclusive lens,
remembering back

When Earth’s most robust
and resilient capitalism,
competitive organisms,

Where normative expectations
